This Toolbox Tuesday highlights Effingham Health System Foundation

The Effingham Health System Foundation is a 501 (c)3 non-profit. Their mission is to support Effingham Health System's continued growth by increasing awareness through philanthropy and by providing the financial resources that support the delivery of quality healthcare in our community. The Foundation's vision is to expand the scope of healthcare services in Effingham and surrounding areas that meet the holistic needs of the community, ensuring appropriate and timely access to quality healthcare and optimal healthcare outcomes. Organized in 2018, the Effingham Health System Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Effingham Health System, a non-profit, critical access hospital. They make a lasting impact through investment in the future of our families and our community.

On Tuesdays, we "open the toolbox" to highlight a local resource. Whether it’s housing assistance, mental health support, legal aid, or youth services, we want to ensure you know exactly where to turn when life gets heavy.

💜 EFFINGHAM COUNTY STANDS TOGETHER
AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! 💜

A proclamation is more than words on paper. It's a public commitment to awareness, action, and change.

At their October 6th meeting, the Effingham County Board of Commissioners officially proclaimed October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Effingham County!

The Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program (EVWAP) and Safe Haven/Citizens Against Violence extend our sincere appreciation to our County Commissioners for recognizing the devastating impact domestic violence has on individuals, families, and our community — and for demonstrating their commitment to supporting survivors and the organizations working on their behalf.

Domestic violence doesn't discriminate. It affects people of every age, background, and socioeconomic status, and its impact reaches far beyond the individuals directly experiencing abuse. It affects children, families, workplaces, and entire communities.

💜 SAFETY. SUPPORT. SOLIDARITY. 💜

These three powerful words are at the heart of this year's Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign, and they remind us that creating a community free from violence is a responsibility we all share.

At EVWAP and Safe Haven, we see firsthand the courage it takes for survivors to seek help, the challenges they face in navigating the justice system, and the difference that compassionate advocacy and strong community partnerships can make.

We are especially grateful to our local elected leaders for using their voices and their platform to affirm that domestic violence has no place in Effingham County.

But awareness alone isn't enough. We must turn that awareness into action by believing survivors, recognizing the warning signs of abuse, supporting prevention efforts, and ensuring that those experiencing violence know that help is available.

👏 THANK YOU to the Effingham County GA Board of Commissioners for standing alongside EVWAP, Safe Haven, our community partners, and the survivors we serve.

Together, we can build an Effingham County where every individual feels safe, every survivor feels supported, and no one has to face violence alone.

🐾💜 WHAT A WEEK! Another Great Opportunity to Connect, Educate & Empower! 💜🐾

We're continuing to share highlights from an incredibly busy week at the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program (EVWAP), and one of our favorite stops was the 2026 Teen Maze at South Effingham High School! 🎓

This past Wednesday, the Effingham County School District Social Workers hosted their annual Teen Maze, an interactive educational experience designed to help 10th-grade students navigate the challenges and decisions that come with adolescence and young adulthood.

Through simulated real-life scenarios, workshops, and meaningful conversations, students explored important topics, including:

🔹 Peer pressure and making independent choices
🔹 Substance abuse and its consequences
🔹 Academic decisions and future opportunities
🔹 Healthy relationships, boundaries, and personal safety

💜 At EVWAP, we believe prevention begins with education! Helping young people recognize unhealthy relationship dynamics, understand the importance of boundaries, and identify trusted sources of support is an essential part of building safer, healthier communities.

We were proud to join fellow community partners in helping students understand that the choices they make today can shape their tomorrows.

👏 A huge THANK YOU to the ECSD Social Workers for organizing this valuable event and for recognizing the importance of connecting students with community resources and real-world guidance.

We're grateful for every opportunity to invest in the next generation, strengthen community partnerships, and remind our young people that they are never alone when facing life's challenges.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and THREE local agency leaders are stepping up, putting their pride on the line, and having a little fun for a VERY serious cause!

Meet the heroes of the 2026 GREAT BISON KISS-OFF! 🦬💜

These three courageous community leaders are going head-to-head in a friendly fundraising competition to raise awareness about domestic violence and generate much-needed support for the agencies that serve victims and survivors right here in our communities.

And here's the twist…

💋 THE HERO WHO RAISES THE MOST MONEY HAS TO KISS A BISON! 🦬

That's right! One brave leader will earn the ultimate bragging rights (and possibly a face full of bison slobber!) — all in the name of helping others.

💜 THREE LEADERS. THREE AGENCIES. ONE INCREDIBLE CAUSE.

While these heroes may be competing against one another, they're united in something much bigger: a commitment to ensuring victims of violence have access to advocacy, safety, resources, and support when they need it most.

Every dollar raised supports the participating agencies and the important work they do for local victims and survivors.

💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY | OCTOBER 10 💚

Mental health matters. Every person. Every story. Every day.

At the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program (EVWAP), we recognize that the impact of violence and trauma often extends far beyond physical injuries. The emotional and psychological effects can be profound, sometimes lasting long after the immediate danger has passed.

For survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other violent crimes, the journey toward healing is not always visible. Anxiety, depression, fear, grief, and post-traumatic stress can become part of everyday life.

💚 Healing takes time.

💚 Asking for help is a sign of strength.

💚 No one should have to navigate trauma alone.

This World Mental Health Day, we're reminding our community that mental health is just as important as physical health. We encourage everyone to check in on the people around them, listen without judgment, offer compassion, and help break the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.

To survivors: Your experiences matter. Your feelings are valid. Your healing deserves support. And your story is not over. 💜

💜 WHAT A WEEK! Community Partnerships, Important Conversations &… A BISON?! 🦬

It's been a busy week for the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program (EVWAP), and we're just getting started!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and our team is working hard alongside our incredible community partners to make every opportunity count. From raising awareness and strengthening partnerships to advocating for meaningful change, we're committed to making a difference for survivors in our community and throughout Georgia.

💜 One highlight this week was the opportunity to participate in a local focus group hosted by the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (GCADV).

This important conversation brought together community members and stakeholders to help shape the future of domestic violence policy in Georgia. Together, we explored policy gaps, emerging trends, existing strengths, and opportunities to improve the systems and services that support survivors.

Because meaningful change starts with listening, collaboration, and a willingness to do better. We're grateful to have a seat at the table and an opportunity to share perspectives from the communities we serve.

🦬 And speaking of getting out into the community… BUBBA HAS OFFICIALLY LEFT THE BUILDING!

Our Executive Director, Holly Brinson-Tatom, took advantage of the opportunity to introduce her stuffed bison, Bubba, to the public for the very first time!

Why is our Executive Director carrying around a stuffed bison? And what in the world does kissing a bison have to do with supporting survivors of domestic violence?! 🤔😂

💜 SAFETY IS NOT A PRIVILEGE. IT IS A RIGHT. 💜

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this year, we're shining a light on a powerful message: SAFETY. SUPPORT. SOLIDARITY.

🟣 Today, we're focusing on SAFETY.

Home should be a place of comfort, not fear. Relationships should be built on trust, not control. And no one should have to choose between their personal safety and their financial security, family stability, or future.

But for far too many individuals and families, domestic violence makes even the most basic sense of safety feel out of reach.

At the Effingham County Victim Witness Assistance Program (EVWAP), we believe everyone deserves to live free from violence, intimidation, and abuse.

Safety means more than escaping physical harm. It means feeling secure emotionally, financially, and psychologically. It means having access to resources, understanding your rights, being heard without judgment, and having someone stand beside you when the path forward feels uncertain.

💜 Safety looks different for every survivor. For some, it means finding the courage to ask for help. For others, it means developing a safety plan, navigating the justice system, or rebuilding a life after abuse.

And sometimes, the safest decision is one that others may not understand.

Our message is simple: Survivors deserve safety on THEIR terms, without blame, pressure, or judgment.

Throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we encourage our Effingham County community to recognize the warning signs of abuse, listen without judgment, support survivors, and help create a community where safety is a reality for everyone.

💜 You deserve to feel safe. You deserve to be heard. You deserve a future free from violence.
