Members of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department Kelby Sikes, Dahlon Billings, Reese Porter, and Davin Keys, along with Timothy Chick of the Campo Volunteer Fire Department, traveled to Rocky Ford today to complete their Incident Qualification Card “Red Card” strengthening wildland fire response capabilities across Baca County. See photos below taken after the physical fitness “pack” test where to pass they must carry 45 lbs of extra weight and walk 3 miles, it must be complete in 45 minutes.

Renewing their certification alongside the new members is Matthew Self, Cole Babbitt, and Kasey Johnson. To keep this certification members must renew yearly. Not pictured Kevin Johnson who is currently deployed at the Aspen acres fire.

So, what does Red Card Certification mean for our department and our county?

A Red Card certifies firefighters who have completed specific training and demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and physical readiness needed to respond safely and effectively to wildland fires. This allows our firefighters to work alongside local, state, and federal agencies on wildland incidents both here at home and when assistance is needed elsewhere.

🔥 It also creates an important opportunity for our department and our county.

With Red Card-qualified personnel, SVFD and CVFD can now be eligible to receive reimbursement and federal funding for qualifying wildland fire deployments and response work. Instead of those resources and associated funding automatically going to outside agencies brought in to provide qualified personnel, our own local firefighters can fill more of those roles—keeping more of those resources right here in our department and community.

For Baca County, this means more trained and qualified firefighters close to home, stronger cooperation between our local departments, and increased capability to respond when wildfires threaten our communities.

Our firefighters are volunteers, but the commitment, training, and responsibility that come with the job are very real. Every certification earned and every hour spent training makes our local departments stronger and our county better prepared for whatever emergency comes our way.

We are proud of our SVFD and CVFD members for putting in the work to strengthen wildland fire response throughout Baca County. 🚒🔥

This year’s SVFD Softball Tournament was an incredible success, and it simply would not have been possible without the amazing support of our community.

A huge THANK YOU to the Springfield Rec Board for allowing us to use the fields, Pops Liquor Store, Gary’s Backyard Smokehouse & BBQ, Bowman Ellis with Evergreen Electric, Katelynn’s Flower Barn, and all of our generous sponsors, donors, volunteers, players, and everyone who came out to support the event.

A very special thank you goes to our incredible Fire Wives, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes before, during, and after the tournament. From organizing, cooking, selling food and drinks, and handling countless other tasks. We truly couldn’t have done it without them.

Seeing our community come together to support the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department means more than words can express. Because of your generosity and participation, this fundraiser exceeded our expectations and will help us continue serving our community.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who played a part in making this weekend such a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s tournament, and we promise it will be even bigger, even better, and even more fun!
