Back in June, members of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department along with Campo Volunteer Fire and Springfield EMS took part in a hands-on extrication training organized and led by Training Officer, Davin Keys. This is a biannual training our department puts on as an essential part of emergency response preparedness.

Extrication training focuses on safely and efficiently removing individuals trapped in vehicles after serious accidents. Our firefighters practiced using specialized tools and techniques to handle real-life crash scenarios — skills that can truly mean the difference between life and death.

We’re incredibly proud of our volunteers for continually improving their skills and staying ready to serve. Their dedication ensures that when our community calls, we’re ready to respond quickly, safely, and effectively.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Plains Disposal for allowing SVFD the use of their property and facilities for this training, and to Charlie Turner for generously donating the vehicles we used to practice on.

🔥 🚨 Since 3:00 am this morning crews have been on scene of a large haystack fire between County Road R & S on County Road 29.

The cause of the fire is due to a common occurance of haystack combustion which is a process of spontaneous combustion that occurs in moist hay, where a chemical reaction generates heat that can eventually lead to ignition.

As of 7:00 am crews have 100% containment, so the fire is not going anywhere but it will continue to burn🚨 🔥

The Springfield Volunteer Fire Department extends our heartfelt condolences to the Campo Volunteer Fire Department, the friends and family of Assistant Fire Chief Travis Billings, and the entire Campo community.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Chief Travis on October 16, 2025. Any loss of life is a tragedy, but the loss of a fellow firefighter strikes especially deep in our hearts and departments. We are more than departments; we are a family. And today, our fire family mourns one of its own.

Travis was more than just a firefighter, he was a father, a husband, a dedicated public servant, a leader, a neighbor, and a friend to many. His commitment to his department and community was evident in every call he answered and every life he touched. Travis embodied the spirit of selfless service, always showing up first, giving his all, and doing it with compassion and humility.

To our fire family at Campo Fire— please know that we stand with you in your grief. To the Billings family — you are in our hearts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Chief Billings, thank you for your service and your sacrifice. It was a honor to serve along side you for so many years. Your legacy will continue to inspire us all.
