Thank you, Lindsay Sabadosa, State Representative, 1st Hampshire District, Mindy Domb, State Representative, Carlos Gonzalez State Representative for all your advocacy and support for immigrants in Massachusetts.
House session ended at 6:08 PM today, and nearly an hour later, the hallways are still filled with cheers.
Thatβs because we voted 134β21 to pass the PROTECT Act, with immigrants and advocacy organizations packing the gallery to witness todayβs debate.
The PROTECT Act ensures Massachusetts lives up to its values of fairness, safety, and due process for all. It limits unnecessary collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, strengthens protections in our courts, and safeguards the rights of immigrant communities across the Commonwealth.
At its core, this bill is about trust, making sure people can go to school, seek medical care, and participate in civic life without fear. By protecting due process and setting clear boundaries, Massachusetts can lead with compassion and uphold equal justice under the law.
Iβm deeply grateful to my colleagues in the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, including Chair Gonzalez, Chair Vargas, and Rep. Garcia, as well as Chair Cahill of the Joint Committee on Public Safety, Chair Michlewitz of Ways and Means, and Speaker Mariano. Their leadership and their commitment to meeting with every member to build consensus made this moment possible.
Thank you as well to the many constituents who spoke up in support of this bill. Your emails, calls, and messages were powerful, and they made a difference.
Next stop: the Senate.
