Urban Wildlife Rehabilitation is a volunteer-run, 501(c)3 nonprofit that is dedicated to providing medical care, nourishment, and shelter to injured, ill, and orphaned wildlife until they are healthy enough to return to their natural environment for a second chance at life. We are fully licensed by the Massachusetts' Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and specialize in rehabilitating small mamm

North Texas Wildlife Center

Sometimes, I think about how liberating it must be to not care. To see the animal on the curb and not have the urge to stop and check on them. To see a bird struggle to take off and not have my interest piqued. To see the trees being cut down and not wonder who lost their homes today.

But then I realize, I don’t want to be liberated by oblivion.

I want to be moved by compassion.

I want to be empowered by curiosity.

I want to be brave with action.

Our little flying squirrel Val is at Tufts for an examination and treatment. She was found in the middle of the road at 5pm by a very young girl. She was taken home, fed, and kept for 24 hours until I received the call.

All the pictures I received were sad. She was being played with like a toy, not like the adult wild animal she is. I couldn't get the squirrel out of there fast enough. They were busy and couldn't get it to me for another 15 hours. I wasn't having that. This squirrel needed help ASAP and couldn't wait.

Fellow rehabilitator Alissa to the rescue again! I can't thank her enough! She drove over and picked the poor thing up and brought her to me as I was leaving work for the night. There was so much going on with this situation that said this squirrel is injured. An adult flying squirrel should not be hanbleable or docile, especially with a child.

After anti inflammatories were administered and in observation, her behavior didn't change, and she was head pressing, indicating serious head trauma. She was immediately transported to Tufts Wildlife Clinic for veterinary care.

Thank you, Jamie, for making a 2 hour trip to be able to transport her for us! Val was at Tufts first thing this morning! Fingers crossed for her. The prognosis isn't good with head injuries.

Gardening Tips and Tricks

Right on cue for spooky season, the deep hooting starts in the twilight: hoo-hoo-HOO, hoo-hoo. Hollywood has trained you to hear it as ominous.

Let me reframe it for you: you're eavesdropping on a love song.

I'm a great horned owl, and fall is when my mate and I begin our courtship DUETS. Listen closely on a still evening and you'll hear two voices — mine deeper (yes, the male sings lower despite being smaller), hers higher, answering, overlapping, synchronizing. Pairs that duet well stay together; many of us mate for life and hold the same territory for years.

Why start courting now? Because we run on the most extreme calendar in American birding:

→ We are among the EARLIEST nesting birds on the continent: eggs in the nest by late December to February, depending on region
→ Yes, that means incubating through ice storms and snow — mothers sit buried in snow, eggs at 98 degrees beneath them
→ The strategy is brutal genius: our owlets fledge in early spring exactly when prey is abundant and young, naive rodents flood the landscape
→ We don't build nests — we STEAL them. That big stick nest the red-tailed hawks or crows built? Ours now. (This is also why crows despise us and mob us on sight. The feud is ancient and personal.)

My specs, since you're curious:
→ Grip strength that can sever a spine — I take prey up to skunks (I'm one of the few who doesn't care about the spray; my sense of smell is poor) and even other raptors
→ Silent flight, a neck that rotates 270 degrees, and hearing that pinpoints a mouse under leaves
→ Those "horns"? Just feather tufts. Mood antennas, not ears.

What we need from you:
✅ NO RAT POISON — a poisoned rodent poisons us. This kills more owls than anything else you control.
✅ Keep big old trees and old stick nests standing
✅ Hear duets? Enjoy them from a distance — and know your rodent problem is being handled, free, all winter

Come join us on Saturday, September 19th, 10 AM - 2 PM, to support our friends and colleagues at Whip City Animal Sanctuary for their 3rd Annual Hogs & Horsepower Car Show! Admission is free! Donations to Whip City are greatly appreciated! This is a fundraiser for them! Vendor spots are $10 if anyone would like to participate! A local Westfield nonprofit rescuing farm animals and providing them a place to live out their natural lives. Livestock, poultry, swine, bovine, they've got it! Come out and show your support for a wonderful organization!

We'll be there with our educational booth and all our merchandise for sale. Bring the kids to visit all the animals, then come meet us for some activities and to take our Wildlife Hero Pledge and sign our Pledge Board. I'll post more soon on our booths and activities! Stay tuned! More to come!

Nutting Stream Wildlife Rehab Clinic

So…I just noticed that there are over 5 THOUSAND of YOU following my wildlife rehab clinic! Holy rascally raccoons and pouched (o)possums!

Thank you all for your kind and supportive thoughts, donations (time, money, supplies, food) and most of all, your love, respect, and compassion for wildlife. Three years ago, I had no idea what I was in for. Three years later, I couldn’t imagine not doing this work. Even with the devastating losses, sadness, heartbreak, exhaustion, anxiety and stress, feeling overwhelmed from day 1 of baby season until a couple months after the final release, and the financial strain, I am still saving precious lives and giving them the chance they deserve. And when I finally fall into bed exhausted, and often crying, my heart is at peace knowing that I’m doing something important to restore the natural balance and right some of the wrongs done to these innocent babies, whether accidental or intentional.

So, again thank you all for your support. I couldn’t do this work without you. 🥰🦝

The Ojai Raptor Center

While anticoagulant rodenticides (rat poison) are banned for individual use in California, they remain available for professional use, and we continue to admit poisoned raptors to our hospital.

Rodenticides do not stay where they are placed. They move up the food chain. When rodents eat poison, they usually don't die right away; instead, they move on, weakened, slow, and easy to catch. Owls, hawks, eagles, bobcats, coyotes, and other wildlife then eat those poisoned animals and can suffer severe internal bleeding, organ damage, seizures, slow starvation, and death.

And when a parent brings poisoned prey back to the nest, it can kill their babies too.

Protect raptors and other wildlife by using natural rodent control methods like landscape modification, exclusion, and natural repellents along with mechanical trapping devices to promote a healthier environment.
