The James Project

The James Project Wrap Around Foster Care Support in Sangamon County.

The James Project consists of three main ministries: Call 1:27, James Place, and Closet 1:27

Call 1:27 recruits, educates and supports those desiring to become foster or adoptive parents and those who are already following that call. James Place is a home that takes in foster children providing them with a long term, Christ-centered home environment as long as needed until they return home or are

adopted. Closet 1:27 fills the need many foster children have when coming into care and not having the necessities and clothing needed. We provide clothing, toiletries, and baby items/furniture to those coming into care or transitioning to a new home.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT:
“I have been volunteering since 2017-mostly filling requests from the closet, also some grocery shopping, helping with Thanksgiving purchases and distributions, and fundraisers.
After retiring, I looked for volunteer opportunities that would be interesting and satisfying to me. I really liked the James Project idea that not everyone is cut out to be a foster parent, but anyone can do something to support foster families. I love kids and helping them at their most vulnerable time was appealing to me. I like how the James Project closet is so well organized and the fulfilling of requests is organized and easy to respond to, on an as needed basis. I am especially happy when I deliver things and the foster children are home and come to the door and get excited when they see I have something for them. One little girl, probably about three years old followed me down the driveway asking for a hug before I left. Those feelings really warm your heart.
I have also delivered groceries to grandparents raising grandkids. As a grandparent now myself, I see how challenging this could be. I have delivered to a couple grandmothers who get around with walkers and live in apartments, where just shopping and getting the groceries inside with little ones around seems difficult, not to mention the financial burden of feeding little ones, probably when they are on a fixed income themselves”- Amy We can’t do our work without people like Amy! We are extremely grateful for her years of service 💙💚

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the incredible single foster moms who open their hearts and homes to children who need safety, stability, and love. Many are carrying the emotional, financial, and day-to-day responsibilities alone — showing up every single day for kids who have already experienced so much change.

At the same time, we recognize the small but powerful percentage of men who are stepping up to foster, mentor, and support children in care. Positive male role models matter. Whether through fostering, coaching, mentoring, respite care, or simply showing consistent support, men can make a life-changing difference for a child who needs connection and encouragement.

Supporting foster families means supporting everyone willing to say “yes” to children in need. We need more people — especially men — to step forward, stand beside foster moms, and help create stronger support systems for foster youth and families.
