Here's what around the clock care really looks like at Isabel's House:

Our Child Advocates are with the kiddos every hour of the day, loving and caring for them. We make sure as many parts of their life stay consistent, bringing them to school and keeping them involved in their other extracurricular activities.

Children staying at Isabel's House always have 3 fresh meals a day, along with healthy snacks in-between. We build out daily plans, making time for socializing, outdoor play, and field trips to fun places around our community

Safety and confidentiality are our biggest priorities. Children in our care have access to medical care and a security system keeping them safe.

For 19 years, Isabel's House has been able to provide safe, confidential, and 100% free crisis care to thousands of children in our community.

In the middle of the night, three children needed a safe place to go. Isabel’s House was here for them. 🦋💙

Their journey included uncertainty and an unexpected return to our doors, but today, they have been safely reunited with their siblings and began their next chapter in a stable home. Today, we have the privilege of honoring the life and extraordinary generosity of Dr. Sandra L. “Sandy” D’Angelo.

A lifelong educator and scholar, Dr. D’Angelo devoted much of her life to teaching, mentoring and encouraging others. Her commitment to education was joined by a deep love for children, animals, the arts, her faith and the well-being of the communities around her.

That commitment to others continues through an incredible legacy of giving. Through her estate, Dr. D’Angelo directed approximately $900,000 in charitable gifts to organizations whose work reflected the causes closest to her heart. Isabel’s House is deeply honored to be among them.

Dr. D’Angelo dedicated $50,000 to the mission of Isabel’s House, an extraordinary gift that will help us continue providing a safe place for children and compassionate support for families navigating moments of crisis. Her generosity will be felt through nights of safe sleep, meals around our table, the care of our Child Advocates, and the support our Family Advocates provide to parents working toward greater stability.

Dr. D'Angelo was a long-time supporter of Isabel's House. Over the years, she supported our fundraising events, helped enrich curriculum at the House, donated children's books, and provided essential hygiene and food items for those in our care who needed it most.

Her generosity extended far beyond our doors. Dr. D’Angelo also chose to support organizations devoted to education, children and families, hunger relief, faith, literacy, animal welfare and the arts, leaving a remarkable imprint throughout Springfield and communities beyond it.

There is something incredibly powerful about her generosity. Even after her passing in April of this year, the communities she cherished still feel it. Dr. D’Angelo hoped her giving would inspire others to embrace that same spirit of compassion, kindness and goodwill.

Thank you, Dr. D’Angelo, for believing in children, in families and in the power of a community that cares for one another. Your generosity will continue to make a difference for years to come. 🤍

What does a pack of diapers, a bottle of laundry detergent, or a new outfit mean at Isabel’s House?

It means a child has clean clothes to put on in the morning. It means a baby can go to bed in a fresh diaper. It means our Child Advocates have the everyday essentials they need to care for children around the clock.

Our current priority needs include boys clothing in sizes 14/16, girls clothing in sizes 10/12 and 14/16, new underwear in all sizes, unscented laundry detergent, baby wipes, and diapers in sizes 6 and 7.

These may seem like ordinary household items, but inside our Crisis Nursery, they are used every single day to help children feel clean, comfortable, cared for, and at home during their stay.

If you’re heading to the store this week, consider adding just one item from our list to your cart. A small purchase for one person can meet a very real need for a child in our care.

🏆 Please join us in congratulating Sandy Rice, our 2026 Champion for Children!

During this year’s Community Champions campaign, Sandy raised an incredible $6,070 for Isabel’s House, helping provide safety, care, and support to children and families throughout our community.

Becoming a Champion for Children is about more than reaching a fundraising goal. It is about using your voice, your connections, and your heart to rally others around the mission of protecting children and strengthening families — and Sandy did exactly that.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and passion she brought to this campaign.

Recently at Isabel’s House 💛

Our days have been full of celebrations, adventures, creativity, and plenty of time to play!

We celebrated one of our kids with a homemade birthday cake and presents, headed to the backyard for a Coke and Mentos science experiment, enjoyed some sunshine with our Fisher-Price cars (followed by a very important car wash!), visited Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park, and welcomed the new season with fall crafts. 🍂

At Isabel’s House, we want every child who walks through our doors to have opportunities to learn, laugh, celebrate special moments, and simply enjoy being a kid.

We’re grateful to our community for helping make days like these possible. 💛

We want to introduce you to Joy Shockley, our incredible Business Manager!

Joy brings nearly three decades of nonprofit leadership and service to Isabel’s House. Throughout her 28-year career, she served in a variety of roles, steadily growing her responsibilities and demonstrating a deep commitment to the organizations she served. While much of her work centered on event management, one of the experiences she is most proud of was serving with a healthcare missions ministry, helping support initiatives that improved access to care and strengthened communities.

Joy is the proud mother of two and grandmother of two. Being a mom and “Grammy” is at the heart of who she is, and her family is the driving force behind everything she does. She cherishes every opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren, creating memories through crafts, adventures, and everyday moments together.

Outside of work, Joy enjoys reading, searching for unique vintage treasures, and giving old pieces new life through repurposing and decorating. She has a creative eye and loves finding beauty and potential in unexpected places.

One fun fact about Joy: she’s fascinated by color theory and believes everything is in the details. She loves exploring how the colors, spaces, and experiences that surround us influence our emotions and shape the way we move through the world. Whether she’s planning an event, decorating a room, or spending time with her family, Joy is passionate about intentionally turning everyday moments into lifelong memories—both professionally and personally.
