Without their bravery and resiliency, we wouldn’t have many of the freedoms that we practice today. Do you know any Purple Heart recipients? The history of Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day) dates back to 1865 in Texas, where the final enslaved people in America were declared free under the Emancipation Proclamation. Though its history is much older, it was declared an official federal holiday in 2021. DAV takes this holiday to reflect on the profound impact that Black veterans of the Civil War had and the sacrifices they made to make freedom a possibility for all Americans.

This June, DAV recognizes the service and sacrifice of LGBTQ+ veterans. Many served during eras shaped by policies like Don't Ask, Don't Tell, often carrying both the challenges of military service and the added weight of hiding who they were. Even today, some face higher risks of isolation, barriers to care and difficulty accessing earned benefits.

At DAV, our mission is simple: ensure every veteran—regardless of background—can access the care, benefits and support they’ve earned through service.

Supporting veterans means recognizing the full reality of their experiences and making sure no one is left out of the benefits they’ve earned.

Please note that our monthly meeting has been rescheduled from May 5th to Monday, May 12th due to our DAV Service Officers (DSOs) being out of town for training and official DAV business.
