May is Wildfire Awareness Month! Each year, Arizona spends millions of dollars fighting wildfires.

Most wildfires are human caused, which means many of them can be prevented. By taking simple safety steps, you can help protect your home, your family, and Arizona’s public lands. Wildfire preparedness is especially important for people who live near or recreate on BLM-managed lands.

Here are a few ways to be ready:
➡️ Learn and practice wildfire prevention.
➡️ Make a wildfire evacuation plan with multiple routes in different directions.
➡️ Keep disaster supply kits updated and easy to access.
➡️ Know how to shut off utilities such as gas, electricity, and water.
➡️ Have a battery operated radio so you can receive alerts even during power outages.
➡️ Create and maintain defensible space around your home to reduce fire risk.

Conditions can change quickly, and having a plan in place helps keep you and your community safe. Practicing prevention also supports wildland firefighters who work hard to protect lives, property, and natural resources.

A little preparation today can help prevent a wildfire tomorrow.

Business Oregon is calling on Oregon-based orgs to apply for the SBIR Support Program: FAST Match, a state matching program designed to help Oregon compete for federal funding that strengthens the state's innovation pipeline. The selected org will lead Oregon's pursuit of the U.S. Small Business Administration's Federal and State Technology Partnership Program (FAST) grant, with Business Oregon providing $100-150k in matching funds contingent on a successful federal award.

Applications must be submitted as PDF files to Danielle Alexander at [email protected] by 5PM PST on May 26, 2026. Read full RFA:https://www.oregon.gov/biz/Publications/SBIRSTTR/25-27/FAST/SBIR_FAST_RFA_2026.pdf

Note: This RFA is contingent on SBA offering the FAST program in the same structure as previous years. If SBA does not offer FAST grants, Oregon is not eligible, or the program structure changes, the RFA may be cancelled and no awards made.

May is National Small Business Month — a time to recognize the businesses driving our economy and delivering critical capabilities for our warfighters.

On Monday, President Trump hosted a summit honoring the contributions of small businesses across the nation. As the President said clearly: small businesses are “the lifeblood of the American economy…[and] our country is made up of a lot of small businesses and that ends up being a really big business.”

President Trump, through his “Great Big Beautiful Tax Cut and Regulation Cut Bill” (as he remarked at the event), has unlocked significant capital flow for America’s small businesses. In fact, 12 million small businesses received an average tax cut of over $7,000.

At the Department of War, small businesses aren’t just part of the industrial base ecosystem — they are essential to mission readiness, innovation, and delivering capability at speed and scale.

As we join our federal partners and industry this month in recognizing National Small Business Month, we are proud to highlight the businesses making a daily impact on mission readiness, acquisition outcomes, and defense industrial base resilience.
