Western Mass. Jobs with Justice

Western Mass. Jobs with Justice Founded in 1987, Jobs with Justice's Mission is to improve working people's standard of living, fight for job security, and protect workers' right to organize.

OUR MISSION
Jobs with Justice is a coalition of labor, faith, and student organizations working together to build unity and support for the struggles of working people. We believe workers' rights are human rights and to be successful, we have to be part of a larger campaign for economic and social justice. To that end, Jobs with Justice has created a national coalition and a network of local coali

tions that connect labor, community, student, and faith-based organizations and activists on workplace and community social justice campaigns. For more information, please visit the national Jobs with Justice website: http://www.jwj.org. Western Mass Jobs with Justice is a coalition of about 60 organizations. We work with and organize solidarity for unions and community groups doing grass-roots organizing. We post to email lists; maintain and activate phone, fax, and email mobilization lists; and work with Street Heat, the AFL-CIO's mobilization project. We collect membership dues and donations so that we may employ staff. Donations to the Jobs with Justice Fund of the Warren J. Plaut Charitable Trust are tax-deductible and may be sent to WJPCT JwJ Fund, PO Box 296, Granby MA 01033.

“Getting back to our patients’ bedside with enforceable contract language on staffing that provides all of our patients with the care and dignity they deserve is our goal this week, and we hope that Tenet shares that goal.”

The nurses strike will eclipse 150 days if it's not resolved this week.

Angel Hernandez was falsely accused and incarcerated for murder in 2008, alongside his alleged accomplice Charles Wilhite. After two witnesses recanted their original testimony, explaining they were pressured by Springfield police, Mr. Wilhite was granted a new trial and found not guilty in 2013.

With the serious police misconduct at the forefront, Angel also pursued another trial, and one was granted in 2017. Finally, on May 18, 2021, Angel began his 2nd trial which lasted six days in the Hampden County Superior Court. On May 25th, after two trials, and nearly 12 years of imprisonment, Angel was found NOT GUILTY!

Now, Angel needs our help to rebuild his life. He lost everything and the money raised here will help him secure housing, clothing, a phone and travel expenses to visit his ill mother in Florida. Support Angel below!

This is NOT another ad to thank nurses...
Nurses at Mercy Medical Center have been in contract negotiations for months with Trinity Health, Mercy's corporate owner that rakes in a revenue of $20 billion a year. Mercy Medical Center is chronically understaffed, putting the health of its largely Black and Latino/a/x patient population and nurses at risk. But Mercy nurses are first and foremost fighting for patient safety every day.

This Saturday at St Vincent's Hospital!

Today Tenet Healthcare announced their intention to try and permanently replace 800 striking nurses at St. Vincent Hospital rather than negotiate in good faith for safe staffing and patient care. In response, the nurses remain unmoved by the announcement, having fully expected Tenet Healthcare to move in this direction, and see it as yet another desperate attempt to avoid negotiating in good faith with the nurses; while once again demonstrating the for profit corporation’s complete lack of respect for the nurses and the valuable role they have in protecting the community.

In response they are planning a rally this Saturday at 9:30 am against replacement (flyer attached). We are encouraging everyone who is able to show up in solidarity. Now more than ever, we need to stand with our nurses as they continue their struggle to convince Tenet to put patient safety over corporate profit.

"...in February 2021, Providence announced it was selling the hospital to the Devens-based Health Partners New England. That meant that another 151 employees would be laid off and would have to reapply for their jobs, which would no longer be unionized."

HPNE--a for-profit health company-- will be able to turn away low-income, no income, uninsured, and underinsured patients, those on MassHealth and Medicare, and those with health needs deemed too complex. This will affect Black and Latino/a/x people in Western Mass the most at a time when BIPOC mental health needs are at an all time high. This is UNACCEPTABLE. Follow Massachusetts Jobs with Justice! and Massachusetts Nurses Association for updates.
