James River Basin Partnership

James River Basin Partnership Working to improve, protect, & educate on water quality in the James River basin.

JRBP was formed in 1997 as a project of the Southwest Missouri Resource Conservation and Development. In August of 1999, James River Basin Partnership became an autonomous organization, relying on grant funding and membership donations from individuals, businesses and governments across the watershed. Leading the organization is a core group comprised of the Board of Directors, Advisory Council, E

xecutive Director, Project Managers, and support staff. The JRBP Board is comprised of dedicated volunteer members from across the region that represent the diversity of the James River Watershed—county and city governments, educators, citizens, businesses, agriculture, and members-at-large. The JRBP Board is a working board and each member serves on one of our action committees. The strength of JRBP can be substantiated by the number of committed, local citizens involved in JRBP projects, the quality of and high degree of participation in our programs and events, and by the numerous, successful, collaborative projects with other organizations that are also working for better water quality.

What do we do about these problems?
1. Riverbank erosion - conduct riparian plantings.
2. Nutrient runoff - create personalized nutrient management plans for homeowners to reduce fertilizer runoff.
3. Litter - host river cleanups, removing thousands of pounds of trash each year.
4. Failing septic tanks - educate homeowners on septic maintenance and provide rebates to encourage routine pump outs.
5. Invasive species - fund invasive species removal projects.

JRBP staff had a great time hosting Watershed Festivals for Ozark Middle School 5th graders the last two weeks! Our Education Outreach Manager, Brooke, attended a JRBP Watershed Festival when she was a 5th grader at Ozark, making this a full-circle moment for our staff!
Students learned about the water cycle, point and non-point pollution, water quality best management practices, and water quality monitoring by looking at macroinvertebrate critters.

Healthy fisheries require careful attention to water quality, and thanks to the Zoeller Pump Company "We Work For Water" program in conjunction with the Major League Fishing Fisheries Management Division (FMD), Table Rock Lake's largest tributary will see a significant investment in its water.

During REDCREST week, FMD Co-Director Gary Klein Pro Angler presented the James River Basin Partnership (JRBP) with an $11,000 donation as part of the "We Work For Water" program, to aid in ongoing efforts to keep the James River clean. As Table Rock's largest inflow, the James serves as a critical spawning ground for both largemouth and spotted bass, making water quality improvements essential to sustaining one of the region’s most valuable fisheries.

Helping with the City of Ozark’s 6th grade Adopt-a-Class program has been a great annual tradition since the late Larry Martin started it in 2013. Larry was a dedicated JRBP volunteer and board member, and very passionate about educating youth and the public about our shared water resources. Maybe equally passionate about getting litter OUT of our rivers! After Larry’s passing in 2017 we worked with the family to create the Larry Martin Memorial River Rescue Fund. This supports our annual river cleanups, and keeps the memory and passion of Larry alive in our organization. Please consider a donation to support this summer’s cleanup: https://www.jamesriverbasin.com/larry-martin
