Yesterday, Helene struck Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 4 hurricane, causing monumental destruction across its path. Many people are left without a home and in urgent need of help as they begin the recovery process.

The focus of the gathering was to explore the significance of the age of creation and its foundational importance. The event proved to be a fruitful and enriching experience for all attendees.

According to the Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress (2022), on a single night in January 2022, there were over 582,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States.

- Jewish population in the US:

The Jewish population in the United States is estimated to be around 5.8 million, which is approximately 1.8% of the total US population.

- Jews living in or near poverty:

According to the Jewish Journal, close to 20% of the Jewish population in the United States lives in or near poverty, which translates to around 1.16 million people .

- Homelessness among Jewish communities: While there isn't a specific number for Jewish people experiencing homelessness, some organizations and communities are working to address homelessness among Jewish populations. The Salvation Army is honored to be part of the National Energy & Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC) conference, an annual meeting of energy assistance leaders.

Each year The Salvation Army helps nearly 24 million people in need to overcome hardships through a range of social services. This includes helping people pay their utility bills so they can keep the power and water on.

The Salvation Army has a long history of service in this area and remains actively involved. We provided more than $200 million to fund over 200,000 utility assistance services in 2023. Our strong partnerships with energy and utility companies throughout the country like Evergy and Nicor Gas, government at all levels, and utility assistance programs help make this possible.
