The good news is Cali is feeling great after her surgery and wants lots of cuddles. Cali is one lucky cat with zero teeth and eight lives left.

The bad news is the vet found a .22 caliber bullet lodged in her jaw. We can’t say who or how but we know at some point someone shot this cat in the face at Gold Hill Galley in Guantanamo Bay.

She was found on island already injured, they thought it was healed. Part of the reason the surgery was so expensive is they do a full CT scan of the pets’ head and only then did the specialist see there was something stuck in her jaw. It’s so clearly a bullet the vet said she has no weapons experience but it has to be a bullet. We’ve sent the photos to some ballistic expert friends of friends to confirm. Many of our supporters probably have or know someone with fi****ms experience you can ask.

We don’t know why she was shot, but the fact that any animal would be shot without confirming a humane death is disturbing and wrong. Her injury blew out several teeth, left a tooth and the bullet embedded in her mouth, and caused her jaw to shift which meant her teeth dug into her gums because of the misalignment. Removing her teeth removes that problem, allowing her jaw to continue to heal a little more aligned. She’ll be able to eat things other than wet food once fully healed, even kibble, treats, or tiny bites of meat. It has been so incredibly to watch this already happy cat become even more vivacious as you can tell she’s now pain free!

Adorable Cali needs your help. She is (of course) a beautiful calico girl and the nicest cat ever. All she wants is to rub her head on you and cuddle. She was spayed and vaccinated at our Git-Meow clinic in 2024. While she was living near Gold Hill Galley, her jaw was seriously damaged by a sudden and traumatic blow to her face. It broke her jaw and knocked out several teeth so hard one of them became embedded in her gums. The injury has not healed and her lower jaw is detached internally on the left side.

The good news is we can get her surgery to repair her! While she was sedated for x-rays they removed the broken tooth which had been causing her pain, she’s just too stoic to show it. Some healing has occurred so she may always have a little tongue hanging out but this will greatly improve her quality of life and she’s only 2 years old with a lot of life left to live.

The total cost for her veterinary care is going to be $6,000. She’s already had her initial exam, sedation x-rays and the broken tooth extraction to relieve her immediate pain. We’ve already spent $1,000 and the next step is her consultation this Wednesday to make a plan for the big surgery and finalize cost. The estimate seeing the x-rays is $4,500. For this kind of unique jaw surgery there is no lower cost option, it requires a dental specialist. We’re moving quickly to prevent her jaw continuing to heal incorrectly. We’re asking for donations from Zelle preferably as there’s zero fees and faster transfer times. We have PayPal and Venmo QR codes as well.

She had a loving owner who brought her to the US but he couldn’t bring her to his next assignment. This is a huge expense for our small organization but without surgery she’ll always have some pain and she deserves the best life possible.

Pico de Gato and Queso are wishing you a happy Cinco de Mayo! These boys are looking for a home where they can get all the attention and lap time they want. They’re very outgoing and playful, very human oriented pets who want to be near their people. They provide endless entertainment and enjoy rolling around with every cat toy we’ve ever given them. They get along with people and dogs, they’re about 2 years old now and were rescued as strays in St. Kitts.

This Giving Tuesday we wanted to highlight some big medical cases we had this year.

Wasabi and her brother Sushi were little kittens living outside with a caretaker. Wasabi appeared one day with a broken leg. We’ve gotten extensive x-rays and exams from specialists as she’s grown and those costs add up. Thankfully, we determined she doesn’t need an amputation! She has full mobility and use of her leg, she climbs, jumps, and runs normally, you’d never know she ever had an injury!

Smokey is our teddy bear cat, all he wants is to be in your lap snuggled up. He was a stray boy desperate for an indoor home, he wants to be a couch potato! During his exams the vet found Smokey had a condition called Stomatitis. He needed an extensive dental operation to remain a healthy and happy boy. He’s recovered very well and is happier than ever.

Po***ck was the orange boy with the big wound on his side. He was adopted by one of the technicians at the vet clinic where he had his extended stay. Her 8 year old daughter is now his best friend. He gets held like a baby and is the best audience for her to practice her reading skills! His transformation has been an incredible joy to watch!

All 3 of these cats had no other options outside and they’re all the best pets you could ask for. We’re so grateful we have the support for all our work. We hope we can be back at GTMO one day but until then we’re still dedicated to doing all the spay/neuter and rescue work we can. We’re having some issues with Facebook donations so we included the QR codes for PayPal and Venmo as well.

Our hearts go out to everyone on base and all of the animals. Many are staying as not all pet can get off in time and Cuba is a high rabies risk country so dogs have to work with stricter CDC rules. All paperwork for pets has to be done by the 1 base veterinarian. The Jamaican workers are worried about their families and trying to prepare as current immigration policies affect them and the Filipino workers ability to be evacuated.

It’s so heartbreaking all around and we’re hoping it doesn’t get as bad as predicted. There’s some dedicated folks running the pet shelter or refusing to leave their pets if they can’t get them off island in time.

Sashimi and her adopted mom Mavis are looking for a home together! Sashimi was rescued as a small baby from under a trailer in St. Kitts. Mavis was living at a colony but yearned for the indoor life. We got them both on the Wings of Rescue flight and when we put them in the same foster home something adorable happened. Mavis took Sashimi and the other kittens under her paw and became the best mom! She grooms them, cuddles with them, watches over them and protectively stands in front of them if there’s a scary noise.

They have absolutely bonded and need to be adopted together. They’re both incredibly affectionate, confidant, and loving little ladies. They want to be on the bed, they want you to give them tons of attention, and Mavis is a big talker which is so cute! They both love other cats but Mavis is not a big fan of dogs, though she is currently living with a calm older dog who respects her space.

Mavis is about 2 years old, Sashimi is about 4 months old. Mavis has had all of her vet work, Sashimi gets spayed next week. If you’re interested in adopting please send us an email or a pm!

The plane landed at 10pm and everyone was unloaded pretty quickly. They still have to take the drive down to Virginia to finish their big journey. There was an unexpected delay so it’s been a long day for everyone but so worth it to make sure all of these animals got rescued. Over 150 cats and dogs from both islands were on the flight!

You can track the plane on the Flight Aware app, tail number N235SW! We’re helping 17 animals, most of them are foster cats we’ve rescued, and a few dogs we’d transporting to a partner shelter.
