This Monday our Club welcomed Sarah Dillingham of R&R Bindery Service, Inc. as our guest speaker!

Sarah shared the fascinating story of her family’s bookbinding business, which has been family-owned since 1978 and grown from a garage in Virden, Illinois into a state-of-the-art bindery and print facility in Girard. She highlighted the various types of book making services R & R offers. She also joked that she first went to “work” at the bindery when she was only two weeks old!

Before joining the family business, Sarah spent 21 years in education as a teacher and reading specialist, helping students develop a love for reading and the written word. With advanced degrees in Educational Leadership and Administration, she brought a unique perspective on the evolving role of books in today’s classrooms.

Sarah discussed how traditional books continue to serve as vital tools for classroom instruction, curriculum support, academic reference, and deep reading. While digital learning provides convenience and portability, physical books still play an important role in promoting focus, comprehension, and retention, leading many schools to adopt a balanced hybrid approach.

She also shared the impressive scale of the family business, noting that R&R Bindery produced and served approximately 4.5 million books last year alone. This volume of production is a testament to the continued importance of quality printed materials in education and beyond.

To top it off, Sarah generously brought beautifully crafted journals and bookmarks for members to take home for personal use. Our Club appreciated this thoughtful reminder of the enduring value and joy of the printed page.

Thank you Sarah for sharing your family’s incredible legacy and your insights into the future of books and education!

At our Monday meeting, we proudly honored our friend and fellow Rotarian, Tim Granzeau, with Emeritus Status in recognition of nearly 40 years of dedicated service to our Club and the Springfield community.

Tim’s impact has been felt in countless ways, serving as Club President in 1997-98, leading as King of Citrus during our annual Rotary Citrus Fundraiser, supporting students at Ridgely School alongside his wife Lib, and helping establish an Emergency Clothing Fund during the pandemic to ensure Ridgely students had warm winter clothing when they needed it most.

His leadership also helped create lasting Rotary District 6460 recognition through the Jean Harris Award and the Leader Bell Award, honoring excellence in service and leadership. And ahead of our Club’s 100th Anniversary in 2013, Tim authored a comprehensive history of the Rotary Club of Springfield, preserving the story of Rotary’s impact in our community for future generations.

Thank you Tim for your decades of service, leadership, compassion, and commitment to “Service Above Self.” Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

The flags are going up across Springfield in time for Memorial Day!

Through our Rotary Flag Service Program, flags with solar lights are displayed around Springfield on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and September 11th, turning neighborhoods into a sea of red, white, and blue.

Even better, annual flag subscriptions help fund our community grants program, supporting local nonprofits doing incredible work throughout our community.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has subscribed and supported the program this year!

We look forward to seeing the flags waving proudly across Springfield for Memorial Day and throughout the patriotic holidays ahead.

Our Club was proud to recognize our Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) students as they received their scholarship certificates.

RYE provides high school students with the opportunity to live and study abroad, experience new cultures, learn new languages, and build lifelong friendships while promoting international understanding and goodwill.

Each year, our Club proudly sponsors outbound students from our community and hosts inbound students from around the world here in Springfield. These experiences are made possible through the support of our members, host families, and the Bellatti-Kincaid Rotary Exchange Fund, which helps support Rotary Youth Exchange opportunities throughout District 6460.

We congratulate Juliana, Thien, Addie, and Lilly and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to make as global ambassadors of friendship and understanding.

Today I restocked the Ridgely Elementary School MicroPantry to help ensure that students and families have access to food and essential items whenever they are needed most. At a time when too many families continue to face hunger and food insecurity, even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference.

Ridgely Elementary has been our Club’s adopted school since 1991, and Club members volunteer year-round to keep the pantry stocked, while additional food drives help provide even more support for local families.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has subscribed this year!

We can’t wait to see these flags waving proudly again for Memorial Day and the special days that follow.

Our Club had a fantastic social night at Gabatoni’s Italian Restaurant!

With a great turnout that included members, guests, and, from Kansas, Rotary District 5680 Governor Nominee Amy Lash Esau, the evening was full of energy, laughter, and meaningful connection. The delicious Italian food paired perfectly with lively, engaging conversation, making the night one to remember.

Moments like these, gathering outside our regular meetings, help deepen relationships and strengthen our shared commitment to serving others within our global and local communities.

Last night, Club members had the pleasure of attending the Illinois Symphony Orchestra season finale at First United Methodist Church. What a night it was! We were especially honored to be recognized during the opening remarks, a thoughtful touch that made the experience even more meaningful for our group.

The program, Fabulous “Finnish”, celebrated the 100th anniversary of Route 66 and featured a commissioned world premiere by Michelle Isaac that left a strong impression on all of us. From the powerful performance by pianist Janice Carissa to the engaging leadership of Music Director Taichi Fukumura, who many of us previously had the chance to meet at a Rotary meeting, the evening was both entertaining and inspiring.

For some of our members, it was their first time experiencing a live symphony, making it all the more special. We’re grateful for opportunities like this that connect our Club to the arts and to the incredible talent in our community. A fantastic way to close out the ISO season!

Even a tornado siren couldn’t stop our meaningful Rotary conversation.

At Monday’s meeting, Club President-Elect Ashley Dillingham, Project Manager for Clinical Trials with the Prairie Education and Research Cooperative, led an important discussion on advance directives and how we communicate our healthcare wishes. Midway through, we paused and headed to Maldaner’s basement for tornado safety, but Ashley didn’t miss a beat in keeping the conversation grounded and impactful.

Ashley emphasized a simple but often overlooked truth: talk with your loved ones about your healthcare preferences before a crisis and put those wishes in writing. In Illinois, that includes documents like a Healthcare Power of Attorney and Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). While most adults agree these conversations matter, fewer than one in three have actually had them or documented their wishes.

She encouraged us to be clear about what matters most, our values, goals for care, beliefs, and who we trust to make decisions if we cannot, and to share that with family and healthcare providers.

We thank Ashley for having this conversation with us, and we hope everyone will take a step in the very near future to make their wishes known. It is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give your family and loved ones.
