Hawks Donate $425 to the Weekend Snack Pack Program!

At the Moahawk Business Neighbors regular monthly meeting on March 14th 2012, hosted by Chris Elliott of Edward Jones, business owners made the decision to invest in our community by contributing $425 to the Weekend Snack Pack Program. During Spring Break, many children experience a higher level of need as they do not have access to breakfast and lunch served at school.

How the program works: Snack packs are distributed before weekends and holidays when children don’t have access to sufficient food. Snack packs include a variety of nutritious, ready-to-eat snacks kids like to eat—such as single servings of cereal, fruit and grain bars, natural fruit juices, raisins, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, applesauce and beef sticks.

Why it’s important: Hunger puts children at serious risk and can lead to behavioral problems, poor academic achievement and frequent absences from school due to illness. Started in 2009 at Maple Elementary, where 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program, Weekend Snack Pack Program is expanding to additional high-need schools in the Springfield School District.

How you can help: Become a sponsor! A Snack Pack costs $4.25, and 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes to provide food for children who are hungry. For more information, call Hadee Sabzalian of Umpqua Bank at 541-342-1423.
