Good morning, as many of you know the parish opened the new animal shelter on Monday. Within just 3 days they had taken in 22 strays making them near capacity. This over population crisis must be stopped. I am happy to announce that we are working with Dog People of Livingston's Fix It Clinic to offer FREE spays and neuters in an area of great concern, Eastover. They will be offering transport from Eastover to the clinic since many of these families have no transportation. This is a huge effort and we are happy to help sponsor it. Many many thanks to our supporters and donors who make this possible.

Also, if you are receiving public assistance, are a senior citizen, or disabled veteran, we will spay or neuter your dog or cat at either minimum cost or at no cost. Let us help you fix this over population crisis.

Our sweet old man,Danny, went to his new home today. As with all our placements, we consider the first few weeks as a trial. His new home has a retired couple who will make him the center of attention! We cannot thank them enough for opening their hearts and home to such a needy senior.

Update on Danny:
We have had him one week now and no owner has come forward. Walker Animal Hospital checked him out and he got a great report. No heart or lung issues and his bloodwork was normal. He is heartworm negative. Danny has very limited vision and he is deaf. They estimated his age to be 15. He has no real lower jaw so the fur under his neck stays a bit damp from saliva or food. He eats a canned food made into a slush with water. He has a healthy appetite. He does startle easily so care needs to be taken to let him know you are going to touch him.

Danny is now part of our permanent foster program. The family that agrees to a long term placement will get all the support needed. We cover medical, pads, food, and any other thing he may need. We are seeking a home with no young children, no large dogs, and only one or two other pets. If you are interested in opening your home to the sweet old man, please message me.

COURTESY POST!

We received a message for assistance with this old guy. We are not in a position to take him but wanted to share.

He was dumped by the finder at the Iberia Parish Animal Shelter. We don't have any additional information. ~Melissa

With a widespread hard freeze happening tonight, here are some things to keep in mind with regards to dripping faucets. The main goal is to keep water moving through your pipes, which makes it harder to freeze. A drip is often sufficient, but if you do a stream, it should be no more than the width of a tip of a pencil. DON'T run every faucet in your house. If you can, choose one that's the farthest from where water enters your house.

Also -- once you and your family are up and moving, it's probably OK to stop the drip, even if temps are below freezing. Flushing toilets, running faucets, washing dishes, washing clothes...all of that day-to-day stuff is typically sufficient to prevent issues.

Most importantly, you need to understand your particular situation. Some homes are more exposed and more vulnerable than others.

Stay warm!

My heart is heavy tonight. Willow, the longest resident at Swampy Paws, passed away from kidney failure. Willow came to us in October of 2011at approximately 2 years old. She was quite a challenge at first. She was an escape artist. She could climb the 6 ft chainlink fence and dig under a wood fence. It was a constant battle keeping her contained. For years we had to hot wire the exercise yard and even then she would escape. She just could not be 100% contained. This made a conventional placement in a neighborhood unsafe for her. Needless to say, potential adopters were not willing to take on the challenge. So as time passed she settled down, but by then, we did not want to uproot her. So she got to be a farm dog and loved life. We will miss her...
