This mom ran toward the unthinkable because that’s what moms do — love makes us run through fear. And while you carried your shoes, you carried the weight of every parent who has ever whispered, “Please, not my baby.”

We shouldn’t have to run like this. Not in our neighborhoods, not to our children’s schools. Yet here we are — another day, another headline, another broken piece of our hearts.

This issue is continuing to be left unaddressed as students are not safe in their schools, places of worship, some of the most sacred places. We must work go protect students and keep communities safe.

Our hearts hurt for the Minneapolis community, please know that we are here for you.

Thank you to the Illinois House for passing SB8 that protects Illinoisans and ensures that guns are safely secured when in the home.

The news has too frequently reported accidental shootings from a gun that was not safely secured. Thankfully Illinois is making itself a leader in this work protecting Illinoisans.

We are deeply grateful to Illinois leaders including , , and for their work. We are also grateful to House and Senate leadership for their work on this bill.

It’s now onto the governor to sign the bill into law.

Students Demand Action has been a place to bring students together to fight for gun violence prevention legislation and to demand action from our legislators.

Students Demand Action Illinois has been doing the work since its inception in 2020, and we are damn proud of it. We are also very proud to see the SDA footprint grow in Illinois with new groups popping up all across the state.

But as Sen. Slotkin said last night, we can still do more. More groups can be created in every town, high school, and college across the United States.

Karina’s Bill was signed into law today by Governor Pritzker! Thank you to advocates and legislators that made this happen!

Students Demand Action put out a statement today following the passage of Karina’s Bill by a 80-33 vote.

Today the Illinois State House took the amazing first step in passing Karina’s Bill out of the state house and over to the Senate. It is imperative that Senate President Don Harmon and the Illinois Senate pass this bill quickly and get it to Governor Pritzker to sign into law.
