A Message From the President- June 2024

Hello-

I hope this finds you well as we dive into the summer season, Summer is here! With Memorial Day behind us and the 4th of July close it's time to gear up for an exciting lineup of events from the Illinois Society of Medical Assistants (ISMA).

ISMA is already hard at work preparing for our upcoming Symposium in October, a vital opportunity for education and professional growth. Illinois Society State Symposium will be held on Saturday October 19th, 2024, in Countryside, IL at the Holiday Inn. There are some great topics planned for this event, such as Drug Addiction, Recognizing Medical Emergencies in the Office, Wound Care, Humanitarian Work & Medical Assisting, and Awareness of Life Saving Equipment in the Office. In addition, let's mark our calendars for the AAMA National Conference September 20-23, 2024, set to take place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. If you are interested in this event, please go to the AAMA website for more information. www.aama-ntl.org

Reflecting on our recent State conference that was held in April, it was a tremendous success. As you already know, new officers were elected, and we were fortunate to host a fantastic array of educational speakers, offering a total of 11.5 credits. Topics included Healthy Habits for Wellbeing, Benefits and Challenges of Having a Service Dog, Targeted Violence Prevention and Response and Sickle Cell: Just the Basics and two speakers on Friday Night, Living with Sleep Apnea and AIDET! What a great line-up of education that we had at our State Conference. Thank you to all that came and took advantage of our State Conference! A special Thank you for all that made this weekend a success!

I encourage each of you to actively engage with both your local chapters and our state society. Your involvement is crucial to our collective success. For those seeking further information, please don't hesitate to reach out to your local officers or state representatives for guidance. Our next scheduled Executive Zoom meeting will be August 13th at 6:00 PM (there will be NO education offered). If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

New Submission Tool for Uploading Non-AAMA CEUs!

CMAs (AAMA)® can now upload non-AAMA CEUs at any time during their certification period! You no longer must save your documentation until your recertification deadline. Once you submit your non-AAMA CEUs, they will be reviewed within 30 days, and the recertification points will be posted to your transcript.

How to upload non-AAMA CEUs:

Sign in to your AAMA account online.
Go to “My Account” at the top of the page. Select “Non-AAMA CEUs Submission” from the left-hand column.

Note:

Review and approval of non-AAMA CEUs can take up to 30 days. The maximum number of non-AAMA recertification points that can be used towards your recertification is 30. The other 30 recertification points must come from AAMA-approved CEUs as per the recertification policies. The recertification policies have not changed.

Attention Lincolnland Chapter of Medical Assistants. An affiliate of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Hello current members, I’m Athena Harmon, your current acting President of the Lincolnland Chapter until such time as the role is filled. As you know we are searching for new members to fill some of our open roles. It would be a great honor to be seated in any of these roles and become part of the advancement of our society’s members. Included are CMAs, NCMAs, CCMAs, RMAs, and all students. We are all Medical Assistants that are committed to our organization, our patients, and each other. Without your assistance, our local chapter will diminish.

To be considered for an open role with Lincolnland Chapter, you must be a current AAMA member with annual dues paid. The following roles in our local chapter are available.

· President · Vice President · Secretary

What are the benefits of being a member?

Recruiting new members allows us to add a fresh voice to the local chapter and helps us to understand the current needs of those currently in the workforce, as well as providing educational opportunities to those who have just begun careers in the field. With membership to AAMA, you get access to your local chapter, ISMA, and AAMA. Your membership dues will provide you with access to educational opportunities and discounts at local, state, and national levels. Remember, the more members we serve, the more learning opportunities we can provide for everyone.

Kathy Schoonhoven is your new president of ISMA. Her hope is that we can create better society involvement by offering virtual meetings and educational sessions within the surrounding chapters in Illinois and within ISMA. Kathy would like to share her excitement with new and old members of the organization to show all what it means to be a proud member of this prestigious society.
