Today was the final day of season seven of Run for Fun, a free fitness program for kids ages 6-11. It rained all morning so I did not know who, if anyone would show up. Three kids arrived, with parents and, of course, volunteer coach Sherry Coker, who has helped me since Day 1 in 2016.

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board supplied hot dogs and chips and drinks.

Sherry and I sat down and chatted with parents and ate hot dogs, which for some reason taste especially good when you're outside under a pavilion as it rains.

As we did, two of the boys ran laps around the small park district building. I had not asked them to; there was no workout because it was coming down pretty good.

"Guess what they're doing?" Sherry asked me.

"What?"

"They're running for fun," she said.

Thanks to everyone! The kids, parents, the Park Board and David Stoeffler and the Springfield Daily Citizen for buying this year's shirts.

Most of all, I want to thank my friends who are volunteer coaches who make this so much fun for me. This year they were Sherry, Harry Keegan, Jackie Harder Rehwald, Wyatt Wheeler, Lynette Bellet Cummings,Kevin Cummings and freshman coach Ralph Green.

It looks like coach Ralph Green is on the brink of being pulled into the pool today during Run for Fun. There’s one more Saturday left this summer. It’s at 10 am July 30 at Hailey Owens Memorial Park at Westport Elementary School, 415 S Golden Ave. There will be a short work out, including the Cake Relay, and then a barbecue. The free program is for Springfield kids 6 through 11 years old. It’s sponsored by the Springfield/Greene County Park Board and the Springfield Daily Citizen. My other volunteer coaches today were Sherry Coker, Kevin Cummings and Harry Keagan.

It's the Fourth of July weekend and that means a low turnout of kids for Run for Fun. We had two: Jacob and Nate. So the volunteer coaches got a workout, too. We had six coaches today, including Lynette Bellet Cummings, who took the photos; Kevin Cummings, who outsprinted me on the anchor leg of the 4 x 110 relay; Harry Keegan; Wyatt Wheeler; and Ralph Green.

We have four more Saturdays. It's for kids 6 through 11. The program is free and is sponsored by Springfield/Greene County Park Board. 10 a.m. Saturdays at Hailey Owens Memorial Park. You can show up for one Saturday or for all nine Saturdays; it doesn't matter.

The kids ran the hurdles today at Run for Fun! The opening activity of the day was the dreaded obstacle course. We did it for the first time this year. It was hot and the kids did amazingly well. (We finished with a tug-of-war over a small pool that I fill at the park.)

During our break session I have a lesson plan and a True/False quiz from the lesson plan from the week before. This morning one of the kids remembered my discussion on Water vs. Gatorade from last year! Thanks to the volunteer coaches who are such a great help to me. The 45 minutes flies by because of their assistance. This morning they were Sherry Coker, Jackie Harder Rehwald, Harrison Keegan and Wyatt Wheeler.

At Run for Fun, the kids work on their bounding, or quick and powerful movements. The fancy word is "plyometrics." The kids try to hop while keeping a ball between their legs. In this photo is Max Rehwald, son of Larry Rehwald and volunteer coach Jackie Harder Rehwald.

At Run for Fun, we do a couple of things to build upper body strength. One of them is for the kids to match their hands along a mat shows where the right hand is supposed to go and where the left hand is to go. The volunteer coaches hold the kids' feet to make it just a little bit easier.
In this photo, coach Jackie Harder Rehwald works with a girl.
