AAUW condemns the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais — a ruling that undermines fair representation and weakens protections against the dilution of Black voting power.
As our CEO Gloria L. Blackwell emphasizes, when communities are shut out of the democratic process, women and families lose ground on the issues that matter most — from public education to equal pay to civil rights protections.
Congress must act to protect voting rights and ensure every voice is heard.

Six members of our branch attended the AAUW of Virginia State Conference in Richmond this weekend. It was a great gathering of AAUW members from around the Commonwealth, all of us hearing from amazing guest speakers and having discussions around our strategic initiatives. We look forward to more of the great work we are doing together!

Progress isn’t guaranteed — and the pay gap is proof.

The latest Census data shows that women working full-time earn 81¢ for every $1 paid to white men. But women’s working lives don’t fit neatly into one box. Many women work part-time or seasonally, often because caregiving responsibilities, unpredictable schedules, or limited transportation make it harder to sustain full-time work. When we look at all working women, the reality is 76¢ to the dollar.

This isn’t about one paycheck or one choice. The pay gap is a sign of pay inequity — driven by a mix of factors like women being concentrated in lower-paid jobs, caregiving penalties, pay secrecy, and discrimination. That means we need a mix of solutions, too: stronger policies, employer action, and tools that help women advocate for themselves.

We had an amazing time at our 23rd annual Spring Fling this past Saturday! A huge thanks to all of our volunteers who made it a spectacular day. We also can’t thank enough our guest, Olivia Campbell, Journalist & Author. We so enjoyed our time with her, discussing her writing and particularly her book Sisters in Science.

Her most recent book, Sisters in Science: How Four Women Physicists Escaped N**i Germany and Made Scientific History, references AAUW several times and highlights the critical role the organization played in supporting the remarkable women whose stories are told in the book.
