Recent devastating floods in parts of Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, have left hundreds of families facing severe hardship. Homes, agricultural lands, bridges, vehicles, household belongings, and essential infrastructure have been destroyed or damaged, leaving many families in urgent need of support.
To assess the situation and understand the needs of affected communities, the STEP Charity team traveled to Nuristan and visited the flood-affected areas. The team met with local authorities and, most importantly, spoke directly with affected families to understand their immediate and long-term needs.
The preliminary assessment found that approximately 27 homes were destroyed, four bridges were damaged or destroyed, and around 500 jeribs of agricultural land were affected. In Barg-e Matal District, local reports also indicated that around 170 homes, 50 embankments, and several bridges and culverts were swept away, dramatically changing the landscape of the affected village.
STEP Charity provided emergency assistance to approximately 60 affected families, including blankets, floor mats, buckets, cooking oil, beans, lentils, sugar, and tea.
However, emergency aid alone is not enough. Many families now need cash assistance, reconstruction of their homes, clean drinking water, protective walls, and other basic infrastructure to rebuild their lives and protect themselves from future disasters.
STEP Charity continues to stand alongside vulnerable families and calls on humanitarian organizations, community leaders, authorities, donors, and compassionate individuals to support the affected people of Nuristan.
