Pocket Gardens of SGF

Pocket Gardens of SGF We will be creating gardens on once vacant lots thruout SGF.

Most of these lots have been nuisance areas for the neighborhoods and we hope to change that by adding the component of a garden for people to grow their own food.

Now the coffee grounds container has a new neighbor. The table scraps is for veggie scraps only. Plz close lid after you have put in the scraps. This is part of the composting program the City has started. Thanks.

Here is a small program that I am applying for the gardens this year and next. The City has a food scrap program. This bucket will be at the Benton location for involved people to put appropriate food scraps in. I am providing cans for people to put in their house and then they can just dump it in the City bucket when full. Also starting a preliminary coffee ground recycle program with a couple of businesses to see how I can promote that aspect of gardening. I am also looking at starting another garden at one of my other properties. I am also evaluating lessons learned from last growing season so everything can be more efficient and productive.

Thre was a time just last year or so that there were many garden items that were not very cost effective to grow vs buying. Now that has changed considerably. Now many garden items can be garden produced at a lower cost to families. As I mentioned in my last post, I gave away over 10 lbs of tomatoes this week. Currently the cost of those same tomatoes at a store would have been well over $15. Just an example of how families and individuals can save by getting involved with gardening. BTW, all of local garden produce is organically grown. Translating not only to the cost effectives of garden produce but healthier too.

Another thought that came up yo try to engage more people is leasing a tire bed. Here is a pix of a couple of tomato plants in a tire bed. I have and will get over 10 lbs of tomatoes from this one plant. The cost of the tire bed would probaly be $1/season. With a max of three tires/family. If interested plz let me know. I have also grown potatoes, lettuce, radishes and sweet potatoes in tire beds. You will get more than a $dollars worth of product. I expect to have 20 tire beds this next season.

This has been a learning curve for the garden business. One idea that I have seen as a goal is to get more people involved. A thought along this line is have a standard size garden bed that can be rented for somewhere around $5/season. The beds would be built and water supplied. The user would be responsible for planting and weeding and watering and harvesting. Of the users that have followed plz give a response if there is any interest in this idea.

Thanks

These little critters are starting to come up. Just in case you can't recognize these they are radishes.

I should note to the previous post, that about 50% of the seeds planted for the beans were heirloom seeds. I am running a test this year to determine if the heirloom seeds will be more or less productive. But, they are free.

Here is another plant coming up at the Benton Garden. I have over 100 of these planted and expect over 100 lbs of produce from these plants. These plants are a great garden plant in a Missouri garden and the produce can be frozen, canned or cooked and eaten fresh.
