⚠️🚨 Guys, there's a homeless cat epidemic in Springfield right now. To be honest, probably in all of Western Mass, but I can't officially speak for other cities. P.U.R.R. has a route of feeding stations in Springfield. Honestly, the route is probably just a 6 mi radius. It's not a large part of Springfield. I also feed on my front porch, because there's a ton of cats that roam in my neighborhood. Some are owned and just left to wander the streets on their own but most are homeless. I feed one other spot in West Springfield. To make it easier, we will say that I have 15 stops total on a regular day. Would you like to guess how many cats I feed on a regular day at those 15 stops? I'll give you some time to think about it....
70. Yes, you read that correctly SEVENTY cats. People are moving and leaving their cats behind. People are bringing home cats and then letting them free roam without getting them spayed or neutered. Kittens are out here having kittens. Yes, we humanely trap and release after getting them fixed, but there's just too many cats and not enough appointments. Do you know how much money it costs to feed 70 cats? Do you know how draining it is? Physically, mentally, and emotionally to watch these cats shiver out in the cold during the winter while they wait for a bite of food? Do you know how badly those of us who help feed and take care of these cats wish we had the ability to just bring them all home? Do you know how many times we've sat in our cars and cried because we're at our breaking point? But we can't stop. What will happen to these cats if we stop? There are women in their 70's and even older feeding cats every day in Western Mass because there is no one else to do it if they stop. We need to step up as a community and do better. Support mom and pop rescues. A friend of mine that has a rescue likes to say adopting a cat from a mom and pop rescue saves two lives - the cat you adopt, and the space you create for them to take in another cat. Donate to these mom and pop rescues. The big shelters don't need your help as desperately as the small ones do. If you see someone on your feed asking for food donations to help feed homeless cats, buy them a bag of food. Buy them a case of cans. Let's work together to fix this problem! 🚨⚠️
