The conversation about autism often focuses on children. Yet every child grows up.

Autism prevalence has increased from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 31 children today. As more autistic students transition into adulthood, the need for employment opportunities, community programs, housing options, and long-term supports continues to grow.

Unlike public education, which is federally mandated for eligible students with disabilities, there is no comparable nationwide system of adult services. Access to supports varies significantly from state to state, creating vastly different opportunities and outcomes depending on where an autistic adult lives.

For individuals with significant support needs, families often remain the primary caregivers and coordinators of care throughout adulthood. As parents and caregivers age, we must be better prepared to support autistic adults whose families may no longer be able to provide the same level of care, supervision, and advocacy.

We hope this updated graphic encourages discussion about how communities can better prepare for the future and support autistic adults throughout their lives.
