With fluctuating temps, and recent rains, snakes are sure to be on the move during the warm hours of the day. Always watch your step, especially near dusk when they may be on the hunt.

Pictured is a beautiful Prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) that was found along a rural road in western Kansas as well as their native cousin, a large Timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) nestled into the side brush.

Friendly neighborhood snake man here, just wanted to let everyone know I’ve decided to start doing my own landscaping/property management, Ozarks Rustic Roots. I plan on hitting native landscaping projects hard this year so if you’d like some landscaping or basic yard care please like and follow my page!

Pictured is an Alligator Snapping turtle (permits required) that wasn’t too happy with his tank being cleaned out.

One of the main things I tell people when I get asked “How can I keep snakes out of my yard” is don’t create habitat.
Popular shrubs and bushes along walk ways and paths are perfect habitat for an ambush predator. Keeping them trimmed up, ~6” from the ground, helps persuade snakes to keep along their way and not hang out in your yard.

Been awhile since I’ve been active here and on my other account, but I’ve had my hands full with my beautiful twin daughters. I’m still out here saving snakes and working with landowners, but I wanted to give a shout out to the business I started a while back now that things have calmed down at home. Right now I offer brush clearing, timber removal, and habitat/land restoration. I will also be selling firewood starting late August, early September.

Thank you for the continued support as I use my passion for conservation to build a business focused on restoring and maintaining the natural beauty of the Ozarks.

Remember to keep me in mind when you or someone you know comes across one of our scaley neighbors!

Short video of a beautiful timber rattlesnake relocated this afternoon. Even though she buzzed me the whole time never once acted like she wanted to strike. Just wanted to be left alone

How many heads can you count?

Last year we had an explosion of copperheads on the family farm. 11 caught within a couple weeks all in the vicinity of the house. With the wet season it’s looking like we’re going to have, expect these guys to be on the move. Most people don’t think of their privacy bushes/shrubs as easy habitat for snakes, but they can easily become a favored spot. One tip I like to give is to keep your holly and the like pruned at least 5-6in off the ground. Getting rid of leaf litter is another trick to curb the chance of snakes using your garden/landscape beds as coverage. As always this isn’t a 100% guarantee ”snake repellent” but does help lower the chance of snake interaction. This also provides a clearer view of what’s going on under the brush/bush/shrub that are so commonly found along walkways around houses, giving you peace of mind when walking by with your kiddos or pets.

This time of year is also big for turtles crossing the road. Remember, always be sure to put the box turtle the same direction they were going or you’ll just cause them to try to cross again. Always be sure you pull off safely and watch for traffic, people are crazy out there.
Common snapping turtles are often seen as well and should be approached with caution. If you don’t have the experience/knowledge on how to properly handle them, don’t push it. The classic holding by the tail does more damage than good, especially on the larger ones. The best way is to hold them by the back of the shell and support the plastron. But watch those back feet they can still do damage!
