Safety Sunday: How do you avoid hypothermia in the canyons? CAC member Ryan says, “A lot of that comes into play before I even leave my house. I check my gear, making sure that it’s in proper working order, including my dry suit. I make sure that I have a good repair kit, which includes either gorilla tape or Tizac tape just in case my dry suit gets a neck. I make sure the zippers on the drysuit are lubricated. I also use a skull cap and typically double up on under armor gear.” What other tips/tricks do you have?

Did you know moss has been around for 450 million years? Moss absorbs and retains water, which helps keep the air around it humid and allows nearby plants to thrive. It also protects tree roots by insulatingf the soil and keeping it cool. Stepping on this ancient plant could disrupt the whole surrounding ecosystem. Imagine rappelling those gorgeous PNW waterfalls with no vegetation around them! Comment if you have a fun fact about moss. 🤓

Safety Sunday: Have you ever turned around and not done a canyon due to weather? With all the rain in the Southwest this weekend, this seems like a timely question. Several years ago, after doing this approach hike, we saw the clouds building behind us and decided to skip the canyon. It was unlikely, (although not impossible!) that the canyon would flash. But what about being cold and wet at the top of a rappel, shivering and wishing your group would get down faster? Sometimes it’s worth remembering- this is supposed to be fun!
