Memorial Day Weekend signifies the kickoff to the summer season at Zion National Park and can draw numbers well over 90,000 visitors throughout the weekend. The Coalition of American Canyoneers gathered a small group of volunteers and worked with the park service to go into the Narrows after the busy weekend to pick up trash, remove graffiti, and dismantle rock stacks.

Starting at the Temple of Sinawava the group proceeded up the canyon picking up litter along the way and making it just past the Imlay canyon exit before turning around. Upon returning to the trailhead, the trash was consolidated and weighed. This amazing group of volunteers managed a record-breaking “trash heist” of 26 pounds of litter pulled out of the narrows (typical trash removal efforts yield roughly 5lbs).

Not only did this service project meet the CACs ethos of conservation, but also builds upon the already strong relationship between the Park Service at Zion NP and the Coalition of American Canyoneers. Thank you to our volunteers- Sam, Wayne, Chris, Rich, Mike, and Kelli!

We have a few spots that have opened up for tomorrow's clean up. Message for more information!

We are looking for three volunteers to partner with the CAC and Zion National Park to do a Narrows clean-up on May 27! Volunteers are responsible for their own gear to stay dry and warm. Better late than never with this update! In December 2025, CAC continued its partnership with the Bureau of Land Management with the installation of a backcountry trail register in Broken Bow Arch canyon. This joint project to install trail registers with Leave No Trace information and an opportunity for visitors to record their visits without resorting to graffiti in these sensitive backcountry locations is another way the CAC is advocating for continued access by partnering with land managers to address challenges as our sport grows.

Similar projects in other BLM managed areas have shown to reduce the vandalism and graffiti, and CAC was able to help the BLM add more of these ammo can trail registers to some of their most visited slots as they continue to gain popularity as well as show impact from increase visitation.
