STATISTICS
According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, as of 2018, Texas has the 9th highest rate of teen birth in the nation and the highest rate of repeat teen births. Approximately 15% of Texas girls give birth before the age of 20. According to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more young women in Texas become parents for a second or third time in their teenage years than any other state in the nation. In 2018, 19% of births to Texas teens aged 15-19 were not the teen’s first. Each year about 210,000 teens give birth. This population is also more likely to experience poverty, abuse, developmental and health issues than other populations. Nearly one-third of teen girls who have dropped out of high school state pregnancy or parenthood was the cause. 60% of teen parents will not graduate, which means only 40% actually finish school and only 2% finish college by the age of 30. 40% of females become pregnant before the age of 20. Teen birth rates are highest among African Americans and Hispanics. In 2010, public spending on teen childbearing in Texas totaled $1.1 billion, while birth control cost approximately $239 a year. Teens that become pregnant are more likely to experience delays in cognitive development, have poorer educational outcomes, and higher rates of incarceration. Teen parents are less likely to complete high school and attend college. Let’s not only help these teen mothers, but let’s encourage healthy habits. Improving access to effective contraception and providing medically accurate s*x education can empower young women with the tools and information they need to avoid unplanned pregnancy. These are conversations we must have!
