****Attention EMS People, Previous EMT/EMR Students, and anyone else who would like to come play!****
Want to have a hand in helping to train tomorrow's first responders?
Come join us Wednesday, July 31st at Centre Lifelink EMS in State College at 5:30pm!
We will be running a Mock Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) to help train our next group of future EMTs. That's where YOU come in! We need people to play the role of "injured patient" in our scenario. And we need A LOT of people, for it to train them to their best! If you're still reading this, available, and willing to come help us out, keep reading for what you need to know, before you sign up! For everyone else, have a great day! π
So, what does it require?
We need people who are willing to have physical exams done on them. You WILL be touched, just like your doctor does during a physical exam, including taking your vital signs like blood pressure and pulse; but you won't have to undress in any way. You will need to be physically carried and likely secured to a lifting and moving device such as a long backboard or flexible stretcher. You will likely be bandaged or splinted in some way, as well, and may have a cervical collar applied to your neck. You will also possibly be laying on the ground or floor, or sitting in a vehicle for long periods of time.
Clothing: You will need to wear something comfortable and something that you wouldn't necessarily mind getting ruined. Weather permitting, we like to run the scenario outdoors but won't do so in extreme heat or rain. If the weather is nice enough, shorts and an old t-shirt (and sunscreen) would likely be ideal. We also will be physically simulating injuries on your body and clothing. We do this by using plastic and rubber prosthetics, makeup and various waxes and adhesives directly on your skin and on your clothing. There is also fake blood used in whatever amounts you are comfortable with. If you have any allergies or sensitivities to make-up, latex, or adhesives, you may not be able to participate. Please let us know.
Children? Yes! We love kids! And the greater our variety in patients, the better! Children ages 7 and up are permitted to participate with the understanding that they can handle the above physical needs, understand that this scenario is not real (we don't want to scare them, but everyone will be acting as if it's real), but also mature enough to take it seriously and "stay in character". (Don't worry, it's not THAT serious of a tone. We still have tons of fun and laughs!) We also ask that we have at least one adult participating in the scenario for each child between the ages of 7 and 12, so that they can have a supervising adult with them at all times. No children under the age of 7.
During the scenario, everyone will play the role of a "patient" or "victim". You will be asked to "stay in character" and may be asked to act as though you are injured, emotionally distraught, disoriented, unconscious or unresponsive, confused, angry, or to just be a trouble maker. π These roles are designed to test the EMTs ability to handle different kinds of stressors and they ARE stressful. Those who don't handle these stressors well, such as those with anxiety, PTSD, those who cannot tolerate loud noises, screaming or high-stress, chaotic situations, should not participate.
We'll meet and begin prepping for the MCI at 5:30pm, in the hopes to begin around 6:00pm. We will likely run the scenario until around 8:00pm with a quick debriefing afterwards. We will then reset and run the scenario again followed by a second debriefing. Dismissal will likely be around 10pm.
So, if you'd like to come have fun with us, get to play a bit, act a bit, laugh ALOT and get some volunteer time in, by helping to train the future's EMTs, please comment here or private message me to let me know that you're coming! Thanks! See ya there!
