Congratulatory Message

Goshi Yamaguchi
President, All Japan Karatedo Gojukai Foundation

On the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the Goju-Ryu Karate Club, College of Art, Nihon University, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the All Japan Karatedo Gojukai and the organizations affiliated with it.

The All Japan Karatedo Gojukai was founded in 1950 by my father, Gogen Yamaguchi. By that time, the Karate Club of the College of Art, Nihon University had already been established under the leadership of Professor Takashi Konomoto.

I was eight years old at the time, growing up in the difficult years following the war. Nevertheless, many passionate young people from schools such as Asakusa High School, Nihon University, and Meiji University gathered at the dojo beneath Yamaguchi Hall and devoted themselves wholeheartedly to karate training. I still vividly remember their enthusiasm and determination.

It is deeply moving to know that the spirit and traditions established by those pioneering members have continued uninterrupted for eighty years. I offer my sincere respect to all of the instructors, alumni, and current members who have contributed to preserving and strengthening the club throughout its history.

I entered the club in 1958. At that time there were many members, and the technical standards were exceptionally high. During these eighty years, numerous distinguished seniors, instructors, and graduates have supported and nurtured the organization. For their dedication and contributions, I express my heartfelt gratitude.

As I celebrate my eighty-fourth year, I still carry within me the ambition and determination that were planted during my student days. The brilliance of youth continues to burn in a corner of my heart.

As the saying goes:

“Strike while the iron is hot.”

I hope that all current members will continue to pursue their dreams and aspirations with passion and determination, and dedicate themselves fully to their training and personal development.

To all alumni and supporters, I ask that you continue to stand beside and encourage the current generation. The spirit cultivated through this long and proud tradition should continue to guide and enrich your lives.

I sincerely pray for the continued prosperity of the Goju-Ryu Karate Club and offer my warmest congratulations on this memorable anniversary.

Your greatest weapon is your mindset. Train it to see opportunities. Instead of obstacles. 🤔💭👊🏼

QOW316 - "The first thing we do in this world is to breathe and even today, 90% of people do not know how to breathe correctly. If your breathing is wrong, your body will be wrong and your mind will be wrong also." — Hirozaku Kanazawa, Meijin

In Goju-ryu, this isn’t theory, it’s practice. Breathing teaches you how to control tension, timing, and focus. If your breath is off, everything else starts to break down. Your stance weakens. Your strikes lose structure. Your mind starts to rush.

Think about Sanchin kata. You can’t fake it. If your breathing is shallow or out of sync, your body tightens in the wrong places. You lose balance. You fatigue faster. When you correct the breath, deep, controlled, connected to movement, you feel the difference immediately. Your posture stabilizes. Your movements become more deliberate.

Try this in your next session. During kihon or kata, pay attention to your breathing first, not your speed or power. Are you holding your breath during transitions? Are you exhaling with purpose on impact? Spend five minutes just syncing breath with movement.

Have you noticed how your performance changes when you’re nervous or tired? Your breathing shortens. Your timing slips. What would happen if you trained your breath the same way you train your techniques?

In Goju-ryu, breath is not separate from technique, it is the technique. When you learn to control it, your body follows, and your mind settles.

QOW315 - "The only way to achieve greatness in life is to have patience, consistency, and discipline.” — David Goggins

Karate will test all three.

Patience shows up when progress takes longer than you expected. You repeat the same kata for months, sometimes years, and still find mistakes. You don’t rush it. You stay with the process.

Consistency shows up in your attendance. You train even on the days when energy is low. If you train three times a week for a year, that’s over 150 sessions. That kind of volume changes your body, your timing, and your mindset.

Discipline shows up in how you train. Do you correct your stance when it slips? Do you stay focused during drills? Do you practice outside of class?

Think about your own routine. Which one of these three areas is weakest right now? Are you impatient with your progress? Are you inconsistent with your schedule? Are you cutting corners during training?

Pick one area this week and tighten it up. Show up one extra day. Fix one habit. Stay with one technique until it improves.

Greatness in martial arts isn’t a moment. It’s built through what you do, over and over again.
