Today in African American History-July 4th...

July 4th is a complex date in African American history. While the nation celebrates Independence, historically, Black Americans have often marked this day with critical reflection. Key milestones include Frederick Douglass’s 1852 address, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?", and the 1963 Gwynn Oak Amusement Park desegregation protests in Baltimore.Specific historic moments on this day feature profound demonstrations of equality and civil rights:
▪︎1827: New York emancipated its enslaved population, which was celebrated by Black communities.
▪︎1852: Frederick Douglass delivered his famous oration to the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society, challenging the nation on the hypocrisy of celebrating liberty while millions remained in chains.
▪︎1912: Heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson defeated Jim Flynn, which ignited celebrations and sparked racial backlash across the country.
▪︎1963: Civil rights demonstrators converged on the Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Baltimore, Maryland, to protest its segregation policies. Nearly 300 clergy members and activists were arrested in a massive show of integrated resistance. (Zinn Education Project)

Today July 1st in African American History...

●1889: Frederick Douglass was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison as Minister-Resident and Consul-General to Haiti. This marked the highest-ranking government position achieved by an African American at that time.
●1917: The horrific East St. Louis Race Massacre began in Illinois. Sparked by racial tensions and labor disputes, white mobs attacked Black neighborhoods, resulting in hundreds of deaths, mass injuries, and the destruction of millions of dollars in property.
●1967: Major Robert H. Lawrence Jr. was named the first African-American astronaut.

Tennessee State University and Meharry Medical College have an accelerated 7-year MD/DDS program with full-ride scholarship potential—and currently have zero Black male applicants.
