Celebrated annually on August 4th, Coast Guard Day commemorates the anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard as the Revenue-Marine in 1790. Since 1790 its duties have only increased, but the Coast Guard keeps serving as safe-keepers of the United States' coast, making it the oldest continuous maritime service in the country.

Today, August 2, marks the day in 1776 when most of the delegates to the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence.

While July 4 is celebrated as Independence Day because the Declaration was officially adopted, August 2 is remembered as the day many of our nation's founders put their names—and their lives—on the line for the cause of liberty.

John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed first with his famously bold signature. In all, 56 courageous men signed the Declaration.

Their courage and commitment helped shape the United States we know today. As we remember this historic day, may we continue to value the principles of freedom, responsibility, and the pursuit of a more perfect union.

Chapter Librarian and Literary Committee chair worked with Maury County to place a little library at a Spring Hill’s park. According to the National Literacy Institute 54% of U.S. adults read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level, and 64% of our country’s fourth graders do not read proficiently.
