As Mental Health Month winds down, we’re reminded this conversation doesn't end in May. From looking for the helpers to breaking the stigma, each step matters — but the most powerful step is the one we keep taking together.

That’s why we’re recognizing the champions among us. The Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year Awards honor those who’ve gone above and beyond to support mental wellness in Kansas’ rural communities — through action, outreach and empathy.

Join us in committing to carrying the conversation forward — on your farm, in your town and with the people who matter most.

Because mental health matters. Always.

The Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Board of Directors has selected fifth-generation farmer and stockman Glenn Brunkow to serve as president following Joe Newland’s resignation.

“Serving as president of Kansas Farm Bureau is a tremendous honor, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this great organization,” says Brunkow. “Farming and ranching are the backbone of our state, and I look forward to working alongside farm and ranch families to strengthen our organization, advocate for rural communities and ensure a strong future for Kansas agriculture.”

Newland, who was elected as KFB President in 2022, stepped down to pursue a new opportunity.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 Kansas Leopold Conservation Award.

The award honors ranchers, farmers and forestland owners who go above and beyond in their management of soil health, water quality and wildlife habitat on working land.

Sand County Foundation and national sponsor American Farmland Trust present Leopold Conservation Awards to private landowners in 28 states. In Kansas, the $10,000 award is presented with Kansas Association of Conservation Districts, Kansas Farm Bureau and the Ranchland Trust of Kansas.

Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes landowners who inspire others to consider conservation opportunities on their land. In his influential 1949 book, “A Sand County Almanac,” Leopold advocated for “a land ethic,” an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage.

“The Leopold Conservation Award highlights farms and ranches that are strengthening their land today while protecting it for future generations because they know conservation isn’t a program, it’s a way of life,” said Joe Newland, Kansas Farm Bureau president. “I encourage any Farm Bureau member of Kansas interested in applying to reach out to KFB for assistance in completing the application.”

Award applications may be submitted on behalf of a landowner, or landowners may nominate themselves. The application form can be found at www.sandcountyfoundation.org/ApplyLCA.

The nomination deadline date is June 1.

Sand County Foundation inspires and empowers private landowners to ethically manage the natural resources in their care.

Without our donors, none of the accomplishments our members accomplished would be possible. In addition to our Tier One Donors (logo's displayed), we had our Tier 2 Donors who's sponsorship funded our hotel rooms, travel costs, parking passes, registration fees, and our matching State Shirts!

Our Tier One Donors donated $250 or more towards our fundraising goal and we are so very grateful for their support. Our Tier Two Donors donated between $100-249! Please consider supporting these businesses as they invest in our community and our young people!
