Small trees
There is a quiet magic in planting a tree that stays within its own footprint while still offering a full display of flowers and fruit. People often hesitate to add trees to smaller landscapes because they fear future maintenance, but varieties like the pawpaw or crabapple are perfectly scaled for human-sized patches of earth. Seeing those blossoms pop in the spring brings such a sense of life to a patio, and the bonus harvest is just nature being generous. You gain shade and character without the looming presence of a giant forest dweller. It is about working with the ground you have and letting these smaller specimens provide all the drama a garden needs.
