Today Sterling completed his Leave No Trace Instructor Level I course and is now the first Scout in 6 years, and second overall, to achieve this achievement.

He is now able to train other scouts and groups in Leave No Trace. He is likely the last scout in the nation to complete also this due to recent changes that will restrict scouts to the Skills (non instructor) course moving forward.

Some days are not always happy. It is sad news that we report that Art Schoenstadt, one of the key members of VFW Post 6849, our charter organization, was killed by a driver under the influence yesterday. Art Schoenstadt was a lot of things to many and at 81 still had a lot to live and give our community.

The picture is him in the foreground filming the rededication of the VFW Billy Paulsen Memorial Hall last July.

After our COR had a stroke a while ago, Art stepped up and was a constant presence helping the troop. Just as the VFW serves as great chartering organizations for scouting, Art has always been there for the troop helping us obtain scholarships from the VFW and providing sage advice to me as scoutmaster and the other adults and scouts he engaged with.

He will be missed by the troop and me personally.

————-
Below is some background on Art.

He was retired from the Army and still heavily involved with the VFW Post 6849 in Spreckels as the Post Quartermaster.

He was a musician and regular player with the Good Shepherd folk group.

His was a wonderful husband who lost his wife Betsy a few years ago and who adored his two children, Michelle and Art, Jr.

He had been a math professor at the Naval Postgraduate School and was still a professor emeritus there.

He was enjoying a deserved retirement but still heavily engaged in the community.

He shared his musical talents during Monterey Bay Catholic Cursillos and was part of local music groups for years.

And he was someone who was kind and generous with his time and willing to help those in need.

The story as of today in the news.

5 Scouts with the Troop took part in beach cleanup today. Starting at Marina State Beach they hiked 3 miles to Ft Ord State Park and picked up over 6 full bags of trash.

Unfortunately we found a massive set of thin plastic covering material that was spread through over a mile of the beach and one full sheet in the waves. We picked up some but the amount we had to leave - likely hundreds of pounds - drawled the 100 to 150 lbs we collected.

Congratulations on a great job today helping conserve our beaches.

It was only 17 miles, but this weekends backpacking trip was definitely one of the harder treks we have done in the last 5 years.

But the scouts:
- got to play in the lake
- Learned how critical water sources are
- Filtered over 40 liters of creek and trough water to get through Saturday and Sunday
- Learned how to reckon and orienteer when trails are poor to not present

For Luel and Calvin it was an epic first trip and they did overcame a lot to complete it.

On a cloudless late summer day, Troop 60 and the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council, Boy Scouts of America celebrated the award of Eagle Scout to Rithik Bhushan. Along with the troop, a large number of family and friends showed up for the celebration. Afterwards his family hosted a wonderful reception lunch for everyone. Congratulations on your achievement and we wish you great fortune as you begin classes at UC Berkeley next week.

Thanks to former Troop Eagle Scouts Aidan McFarlane and Nathan Poggemeyer for attending as well as some of our parents and scouters from years past. Scouting really is a family.

A beautiful sunny summer day and another Troop 60 Eagle Project in the works; this time Mark Macias. Mark is installing agility training equipment and park benches at the Toro Regional Park Wuail Meadows dog park. To accomplish this, he raised almost $8,000. Thanks to Sterling for helping with the installation today and to the younger scouts who helped build everything last Tuesday evening. Wonder what other Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council, units are doing this weekend?

The scouts of Troop 60 with thr Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council, Boy Scouts of America served as honor and colorguard for the 2024 Kiddie Kaper parade to kick off the California Rodeo Salinas ( )

This is the fifth year of the Troop serving in this role. Thanks to Sterling, Jayden, Chris and Calvin. After getting back last night from summer camp, you did an impressive job of getting all of your uniforms cleaned and in great shape for today.

Thanks to Maria and Alex and Glenn for being there also.

Lunch and ice cream in Turlock hit the spot and was a fun way to end summer camp 2024. 28inch pepperoni pizza was amazing at Willie’s and Lulus for ice cream. Funniest part was the scouts were so used to stewarding the tables at Camp Hi-Sierra this week, they cleaned everything up.

Last night was the closing campfire and then Saga ceremony at Camp Hi Sierra. The scouts did a great job in the skit “Naptime” (video soon). For the Saga Raymond, Jayden, and Finnegan were awarded the first level Seeker of the Saga award and Sterling and Chris were awarded the second level Guardian of the Saga last night.

For all of the amazing work that Maria Carney did to help scouts she was selected for the Camp Hi Sierra Honor Patrol and awarded a coveted black bead.

Thursday night interim update: it is 1030pm and all of our scouts are very awake and decided that since a scout is supposed to be clean, they would all go down as a Troop to take showers tonight. No pictures since that is not allowed in the shower area.

Another reason why I love scouting!
