🔥 You may notice smoke in the Spread Eagle Barrens/Lake Ellwood area today.

The Wisconsin DNR is conducting a prescribed burn as part of its land management efforts. Prescribed burns are carefully planned and conducted by trained professionals under specific weather and safety conditions.

If you see smoke in the area, there is no need for concern—it is part of a planned and controlled operation.

👀 Eyes on the Water Volunteer Training – June 8 🌿💧

Help protect the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes by becoming one of SECOLA’s “Eyes on the Water!”

Join us on June 8 (rain date June 9) to learn how to identify and monitor Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM), an invasive aquatic plant that threatens the health of our lakes.

📍 Volunteers will meet at 9:00am and travel by pontoon to meet the SECOLA barge and receive hands-on training from the experts at White Water Associates.

No experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and help protect our lakes. We would love to have at least one volunteer from every lake on the chain participating in this important program.

If you enjoy spending time on the water, this is a great opportunity to make a real difference in preserving the lakes we all love.

📞 To RSVP or ask questions, contact Deb Cini or Jay Weber.

🦌 Please Watch for Baby Fawns! 🦌

Please use extra caution when driving, walking, or biking near North Lake Road and Tall Pines Road, where several baby fawns have recently been spotted.

If you see a fawn lying alone, please do not touch it or move it. While it may appear abandoned, this is normal behavior. Mother deer often leave their fawns in a safe, hidden location while they go off to feed and will return periodically to nurse and care for them.

The best thing we can do is give these little ones plenty of space and keep pets away from the area.

Thank you for helping protect our wildlife!

🖤Loon Nest Alert🖤

We want to share that a loon has built a nest on Bass Island! The nest is located approximately 30 feet east of the dock.

Please help give these beautiful birds the best chance at successfully hatching baby loons by keeping your distance and avoiding the area whenever possible. Loons are especially sensitive to disturbance during nesting season, and even well-meaning visitors getting too close can cause them to abandon the nest.

Thank you for helping protect one of the most special parts of life on the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes!

Did You Know. . .Florence Facts
Who Should I Call (shared 04-23-26)
❓🤷🏼‍♀️❓🤷🏼❓🤷🏾‍♂️❓🤷🏾❓🤷🏿‍♂️❓🤷‍♀️❓🤷🏿‍♀️❓

Have ever had something happen and you wonder “who should I call”? If we rephrase the question to “who you gonna call?” The answer that will pop into most of our heads is “Ghostbusters.” It’s a legitimate question that comes up often. Our goal with this week’s Florence Facts is to answer the question of “Who Should You Call” when something happens or when you need something done.

❓🤷🏼‍♀️ Did you know that if there is a grass or brush fire you should call 911 immediately? If you look up the number for the Florence Fire Department, it may lead you to the Town Office number; however, a grass fire, like any type of fire, is an emergency and you should call 911 immediately. When you call 911 it goes to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and they are able to put out the call and dispatch the fire department directly.

❓🤷🏾‍♂️Did you know that if there is a tree that has fallen on the road you should call someone immediately? A fallen tree especially on a road can pose a safety hazard for anyone traveling that road. Who do you call? If the tree is on a Town of Florence road, you have multiple options. You can communicate with the Town of Florence Office or the Town Board to pass on a message to the highway crew to get it taken care. You can also call the Sheriff’s Department if the Town Office isn’t open. They can pass on a message to Highway Department as well.

❓🤷🏼Did you know that if your power goes out, you should call your Utility? If you are a Florence Utilities electric customer, that number is 715-528-3330. If you are a We Energies customer that number is 800-662-4797. Did you know that if you come across a downed power line the number to call is always the same? You should call 911 immediately and don’t go anywhere near a downed power line. If you smell natural gas odor or have a damaged gas line you should leave the area immediately and call 911.

🤷🏿‍♂️❓Did you know that if you are looking to get a fire number and put a driveway in you need to talk to both the Town and the County? There is an application for a driveway permit that can be obtained from the Town of Florence Office or Florence County Zoning. In addition to the application, the location of the driveway should be physically marked on the property. The completed driveway application permit first gets turned into the Town of Florence. The highway department looks at it to determine if a culvert is needed and then it is forwarded to Florence County Zoning for a fire number.

🤷🏾❓Did you know that if you are planning to build on your property you need to getting a building permit from Florence County Zoning? You will need a permit if you are building a new structure or adding on to a current building on your property. 🤷🏾❓ Did you know that Florence County Zoning also keeps track of septic records? If you received a notice that your septic needs to be pumped, that notice did not come from the Town of Florence. It was from Florence County Zoning.

❓🤷‍♀️Did you know that if you are planning to do work on your property that involves digging, excavating or disturbing the soil in any way you are required by law to contact Diggers Hotline? If you are planning trees or shrubs, installing a fence, building a deck, etc. these are all reasons to call Diggers Hotline. ❓🤷‍♀️Did you know that you can contact Diggers Hotline 24 hours a day and 7 days a week just by calling 811 or 800-242-8511? You are required to contact Diggers Hotline at least three business days before you begin your work. They will contact the different entities to come out and mark the undergrounds lines.

❓🤷🏿‍♀️Did you know that if you have a question about your assessment, you can ask that at any time? The Town of Florence has a contract with R&R Assessing Services out of Oconto Falls, WI to be the assessor(s) for the Town of Florence. If you have a question or a concern about your property assessment, your first step is to call and talk to them directly. They have all of the assessment records for the Town of Florence. They can be reached at 820-846-4250.

❓🤷🏿‍♂️Did you know that if you need a garbage can or if you need a recycling bin there are two different numbers to call? Recycling is a County program. If you need a recycling bin, you can reach out to Florence County Zoning at 715-528-3206. Weekly refuse collection is orchestrated through the Town of Florence. If you need a garbage bin, you should reach out to the Town of Florence Office at 715-528-3595. ❓🤷🏿‍♂️Did you know that if you are missing a wheel or the metal bar for the wheels on your garbage can you should also reach out to the Town? The wheels just click on the metal bar underneath. All you have to do is stop by the office and get a new wheel.

❓🤷🏼Did you know that if you caught a stray dog in your yard, you should contact the Town of Florence Dog Warden? The Dog Warden for the Town of Florence is Bucko Soderberg. He can be reached at 715-528-3081. If you are unable to reach him, you can reach out to one of the Town of Florence Board members. Their contact information can be found on the Town Website.

❓🤷🏼‍♀️Did you know that if you are looking to register to vote you can contact the Town Office? You can register to vote on Election Day at the polls. Looking ahead to the August Partisan Primary Election, you can register to vote online MyVoteWI through July 22, 2026. You can also register to vote in the Town of Florence August from now until August 7, 2026.

❓🤷🏾Did you know that if you have a non-emergency concern about a Town Road that you can contact the Office or one of the Town Board Members? If it is a non-emergency concern you have about a road, like a pothole that needs to be filled, a tree fallen in the right-of-way (not on the road), questions about future work plans, etc., you can reach out at any point. ❓🤷🏾Did you know that if you have a concern about something Town related that you don’t have to wait until a Town Board Meeting or the Annual Meeting to express that concern? If you have a question or concern regarding an issue in the Town, you can reach out to the Office, the Town Chairman or one of the Town Board Supervisors at any point. There are items that may be able to be handled outside or a meeting and items that may need to be brought up at a meeting. If you reach out prior to a meeting, the Town Board may be able to gather information, discuss and possibly take action at a meeting.

Contact Information for Town Board Members can be found on the Town of Florence website the link is in the comments.

The Town of Florence is proud to have open, transparent government. It means that people can clearly see what the Town is doing, why it is doing it, and how decisions are made. Open and transparent means that information is not hidden, decisions are made at meetings open to the public, and questions and answers can be shared from the Board with the community. The ultimate goal is that people can see and understand the decisions that are made, how to ask questions, and share information

One way the Town of Florence is looking to accomplish this is by sharing informational facts about the Town and the Town’s government. Through sharing facts, the Town is looking to help increase awareness and understanding of local Government.

From Gary Merrill, our “Official Ice Out Guy” :

“The official Ice Out date is 4/23/26. We put our boat in yesterday and all of the lakes except for East Bass Lake were open. East Bass Lake was mostly covered with ice.

Last year Ice Out was 4/21/25 and the average Ice Out date since 1953 is April 20th.”
