Robert Ray Clifton was born on November 9th, 1909 in Patrick County VA; and died on August 30th, 1988; in Patrick County VA. He was a WWII veteran. Ray married Nettie Simon Rockstroh; birth and death dates unknown. They had no children of their own; but Nettie had two sons from a previous marriage that Ray treated as his own. They were named Jay and William I believe. Nettie was a master genealogist; and researched the Clifton family, back into the early 1700s. I never met Ray, but knew Aunt Nettie well; she was the person instrumental in getting me interested in genealogy.

Vergie Emma Clifton was born December 7th, 1907; in Stuart, VA. Vergie passed away on August 24th, 2007; in Stuart, VA. She married Clifford Eugene Light (12/22/1905-11/9/1977) on January 4th, 1925. They had 3 children; Vivian Marie Light Helms 1926-2007, Donice Jean Light Connor 1938-1980, and Douglas Clifford Light 1941-2016. Aunt Vergie was the only one of my Grandfather’s siblings that I ever really got to know; I remember fondly trips in the summertime to visit her, and learn about our family history. She was an amazing woman of faith and family; she was also one of the best cooks I’ve ever seen! I can almost still taste her legendary chocolate pie!!!

Noel Samuel Clifton Sr. was born on October 8th, 1905 in Stuart, VA. He passed away on January 12th, 1835 in Danville, VA. As I understand it, he was killed after being struck by a train. He married Lessie Megginson (1902-1985) They had 1 son; Noel Samuel Clifton Jr. (1929-2021) Noel was killed so young, I have little to no information about him or his son. Any information that can be shared would be greatly appreciated!

Leola Frances Clifton was born on December 12th, 1903 in Stuart, VA. She passed away on October 9th, 1996 in Lynchburg, VA. She was married to Joseph (Joe) Jesse Pollard (1899-1972) he is pictured here playing the fiddle. They had no children. Leola and Joe lived a lot of their lives in the small Charlotte County community of Cullen. Supposedly, Leola is the one who named my grandfather Vester! Any other information or photos of her are welcomed as always!

Addie Mentoria Clifton was born on February 21st, 1902, in Patrick County Virginia. She died on October 21st, 1995, in Southside Community Hospital; Farmville, Virginia. She is buried in Liberty Baptist Cemetery, in Appomattox, Virginia; where she lived most of her life. She married Samuel Cole Arrington; who was born on October 29th, 1904 in Charlotte County Virginia, and died on August 14th, 1967, in Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg, Virginia. They had 4 children; James Marvin (1923-2010) Albert Murray Sr. (1924-2001) Ruby Louise (1928-2011) and Thurman Roosevelt (1933-2008) Attached is the only photo I have of her. As always, any other photos or information about her descendants is welcome!

Irene Virginia Owens (1919-1947)
Lester Lee Owens (1921-1991)
Oliver William Owens (1923-1985)
Thelma Mae Owens (1926-2011)
Edith Marie Owens (1927-1995)
William Franklin Owens Jr. (1930-1999)

Starting today, I’m going to start highlighting each of the children of my Great Grandparents; S.L. and Lillie Clifton. I am going to start with the oldest, Annie May Clifton. She was born on June 5th,1899, in Stuart, VA. She passed away on May 18th, 1996. She is buried in Stokes County NC. Where I believe she lived with her husband, William Franklin Owens (1896-1936) I have attached both of their photos to this post. I’m pretty sure they had children; I just don’t have any records of them. If anyone out there can share any other information; please feel free to do so!

Emanuel Newell Clifton was born in 1813 in Patrick County VA. I don’t have a record of his death. He married Ruth Ingram; who was born in 1818, possibly in Patrick County. I have no record of her death. They had 12 children; including Samuel Lester Sr. Who is my Great-Great Grandfather. He was born January 14th 1843 in Patrick County VA. He died on January 11th 1922 in Avery County NC. I have attached a picture of his gravesite; he was a Civil War veteran. He married Malinda Martha Hancock. She was born on December 1st 1842 in Patrick County VA. She died on May 6th 1901 in Patrick County VA. Together they had 6 children. There are rumors that suggest that Samuel left Patrick County in 1878; and married another woman, and had additional children. If anyone has any information on this; please share it with me!

If you’ve ever wondered how our Clifton lineage settled in Patrick County; here is verified information…..John Clifton was born on February 3rd 1758, in Stafford, VA. (Which was still a British colony at the time) Sometime during his life; he wound up in Patrick County VA, where he died in 1850. He married a Nancy Jones; who was born in Halifax, NC in 1778. She died in 1855 in Patrick County VA, in 1855. They had 7 children; their son, Emanuel Newell Clifton, is my (Adam Clifton) Great-Great-Great Grandfather. He was born in 1813, in Patrick County. I can’t find the record of his death. Pictured in the photo, is John Clifton….
