Hi I'm Paloma, and when my grandma was a young, new wife and my pop-pop was in the army, she took cooking classes offered to army wives. She didn’t know how to cook, & was 19 to 20 years old and my mom was a toddler. She said she was really excited to learn how to cook something exotic and they taught her to make coq au vin and some other fun recipes. Coq au vin is the one she remembers most. And my pop-pop was very happy that she was adding more into the rotation.

Hello, I'm Aleena Patel. I asked my Nani about her favorite food memories and she said cooking/feeding her secret chicken and rice recipe for my brother and me. She used to cook it all the time when I was little. It was a family favorite. It was loved so much in our family, we named it, "Nani's famous chicken and rice". I will not be sharing the recipe today because it's classified! ;)

Hi, I’m Audrey Gay. Each time I talk to my Great Great Aunt Gertie I learn more about her. This past week I asked her about any particularly food memory or recipes that she really enjoyed growing up. She shared that macaroni and cheese was one of her favorites growing up (it is also one of mine). When she got married her husbands family was German so she learned to make his favorite a german potato salad. Over the years she recreated it, made it her own and she would bring it to any family gatherings.

The full recipe is below... this is a recipe card that she had shared with my grandma many years ago. The main difference between regular potato salad and German potato salad is that it is made with a vinegar-based dressing and is usually served warm.

Hi, I'm Olivia Quick and today I asked my grandma about a food related memory she has from her childhood. She told me a story about how she always had a 4th of July picnic with both her mom and dads side of the family. They went to an old farmhouse together and everybody brought a whole meal. They always brought fried chicken, potato salad, lemon icebox pie, homemade bread, and fruit salad. They did that from when she was a baby to after she graduated high school. Lemon icebox pie is still one of her favorites to make and eat!

Hi, I'm Sofia Visioni and today I asked my Great Grandmom F***y Doster about a food memory she has from her childhood. One of the first things that came to her mind was her mother's bread pudding. This bread pudding is made with leftover bread soaked in a milk and egg mixture with raisins and cinnamon. Then it is baked in a casserole dish. It was a way to use old bread to avoid being wasteful. This bread pudding also happens to be a dish that my Grammy loves and remembers too. I called her and she told me it was more of a breakfast dish than a dessert. She also said that it was eaten with milk poured on top. This bread pudding has traveled through the generations, beginning with my Great-Great Grandmother. She never followed a recipe but my mom and Grammy recreated it and I even I have had it.

Hello! My name is Paloma Marcus and my senior is my grandma, Cheryl McCardle. She lives in Clayton, North Carolina, and she is 69, turning 70 this year. She is an artist, and she has two studios, a home studio, and one in downtown Raleigh. The pandemic has prevented her from being able to participate in any public art shows. She is still working in her home studio, but she misses being able to attend these public events. She has been handling this pandemic very well. She has been staying inside, only going out for groceries, and wearing her mask every time she goes out. She is also planning on getting her vaccine within the next few weeks! These pictures are her from prom, from university, and one of her currently!

Hi my name is Addison McCloskey and my senior is my grandma. She was born in 1949 in French Camp California. She lived there for 12 years then she moved to go to college. She had to ride the bus to school, but sometimes she’d bike with friends to get there early to play kickball before school started. Because it was a more country place she learned to drive on a tractor. COVID has effected her in many ways some good and some bad. A good way COVID has effected her is she doesn’t spend as much money, and a bad way that COVID has effected her is that she can’t travel as much as she would like to and she can’t see all of her friends as much either. Lastly I’d that she can’t see her family as much but she still has seen some of her family which is her 2 daughters and their family.

Hello! I am Sophie Lee, I am 14 years old and a member of Girl Scout Troop 5380. My senior is my grandpa Morris Stokes. He is 71 years old and was born on September 14, 1949, in Greer, South Carolina. He has always lived in Greer. He is an only child and has two kids, my mom and my uncle. His mother, my Great-Grandmother, passed away in April of 2020, leaving him without a caregiver in turn making him more lonely. When I asked how the pandemic has affected his life he said, that he is unable to go to the places he enjoys, like going out to eat and visiting with his friends.
There were not any childhood photos that I could find, so this photo is from May 2020.

Hello! I'm Aleena Patel, I'm 14 years old, and a member of Girl Scout Troop 5380. I chose my Nani (maternal grandmother), Mehrunissa Ramakdawala, as my senior. She was born on July 26th, 1940 in Mumbai, India. She immigrated to America in 1969. Fun fact: The day she landed in America was also the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon! She currently is 80 years old and lives alone in Silver Spring, Maryland. She has 5 grandchildren including myself. She wasn't a girl scout when she was younger because they didn't have that in India. When I asked her how the pandemic changed her life, she said she was very lonely. She misses going out with friends and attending her exercise classes.

I couldn't find pictures of her when she was younger because they are all in India.

For this project I chose to connect with my Great Great Aunt Gertie.

Aunt Gertie was born in 1927 and will be 94 on July 11th. She lives in a senior apartment building so COVID has really affected her ability to get out. Her only real outings are to the doctor and even her dinner is now on a schedule and delivered to her room. She has been able to see her son some when he has brought groceries or gifts but they have had to stay six feet away and wear masks. She has been able to get out and go on a few walks with her friends.

Aunt Gertie grew up with her family in East Rochester. She had one sister and two brothers, one of her brothers was my grandma’s dad. They had a lot of family that lived close by. When she was young she worked in a jewelry store and eventually moved to Rochester when she got married and started working at IBM.

Hello! I’m Olivia Quick, I am 12 years old and a member of Girl Scout Troop 5380. My chosen Senior is my Grandma, Jean Liddell. She is 75 and was born in 1945. She lives in her home in Birmingham, Alabama. She lived in Tennessee and moved to Alabama after she got married. When I asked her about how the pandemic is affecting her life she said that she's become more lonely. She says that she texts her family but they don't actually talk a lot. She also said to feel less lonely during these times she would love to talk to at least one of her kids once or twice a week. She said that she loves talking to me and that she's excited to see what our troop has in store for her.
She was a Girl Scout but she couldn't find any pictures.
Below is a picture of her from 1953 and a current photo
