At last weeks meeting, the Troop continued our “Learn Together, Earn Together” initiative where the boys started covering the Traffic Safety merit badge. This is one of 5 badges that are going to be covered that highlight everyday life skills and safety that will help guide the Scouts through life as they get older. We thought this one was especially important as we have a few that are/are approaching the coveted ability to drive. During the meeting the Scouts learned about various traffic laws, safety regulations, safety features of vehicles and other topics relating to the rules of the road.

Last week, the Troop worked in conjunction with our chartered organization Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America on a project to construct bluebird houses. The scouts not only helped build the birdhouses, but the rep from our CO provided them with an in depth education on the birds, their habitats, and other topics that affect their livelihoods.

Troop 21 is proud to announce that one of our Scouts, James, has successfully passed is his Eagle Scout rank board of review. James has committed countless hours, days and weekends to not only his success in Scouting, but to the Troop as well. We look forward to seeing James continue to grow in Scouting as well as his personal life. He plans to use the knowledge, skills and abilities he has learned through Scouts to drive his success with a career in the railroad industry in the future. Maybe we will all be traveling in or on one of his future accomplishments one day!!

Congratulations James on your achievement!

Over the past two weekends the Troop worked alongside one of our Scouts to complete his Eagle Scout project benefiting the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter. His project entailed building enrichment props for the outdoor dog yard along with raising funds to support their mission and collecting donations of much needed items. Saturday he presented his completed builds and all items to the shelter. Capt. Davis gave the Scouts a tour of the facility and explained the daily operations of how the shelter runs. Overall James collected $2,000 worth of supplies and an additional $2,000 in donations to go towards the shelters fund. Captain Davis also presented James with the Spotsylvania Sheriffs Office Youth Achievement Award on behalf of Sheriff Harris for his hard work and dedication towards the shelter. The Troop is very proud of James and his project to help out our furry friends that find themselves without a loving home.

At last nights meeting the Troop kicked off a new initiative called “Learn Together, Earn Together”. This initiative is enabled the boys to earn 5 different merit badges through the use of our adult leaders who are also merit badge counselors for different merit badges. This year, we are focusing on merit badges that are valuable throughout life. Our first one is the Disabilities Awareness merit badge. Our very own Mrs. Murphy put together an awesome meeting where the boys visited different stations that highlighted difficulties that those with disabilities may encounter.

Last weekend the Troop ventured north to the United States Naval Academy to attend the annual USNA NESA STEM Day. Scouts earned up to 2 merit badges that focused around STEM and Citizenship. This event is done through application an lottery for units to attend. The Troop is very fortunate that this is the second year in a row that we were selected to be a part of this event. It is truly an amazing place to visit and learn the history of such a spectacular component to our country’s military.

This past weekend the Troop camped out at on the grounds of our charter organization Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America. The campout was focused around rank advancements where the boys rotated through stations where they covered hiking, ropes/knots, whipping/fusing ropes, lashings, fire starting techniques and safety, pocket knife and tool safety, and reviewed cooking techniques. Overall, the boys had fun and got a lot of good learning/review in. In true Troop21 fashion, it rained Friday night but it didn’t dampen their spirits for the rest of the weekend.
