It was an honor for MALEA to participate in the 90th birthday celebration for Goya Foods! Once again, Goya donated an enormous amount of food to different non-profits to be distributed in communities with the need. It was an honor and a privilege for MALEA to host our Sixth Annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner and Awards Ceremony. This post includes community leaders and elected officials.

We recognized U.S. Representative Bonnie Marie Watson-Coleman for standing on the right side of history by speaking up against the genocide in Palestine. She was one of the first and highest ranking NJ elected officials to call out the mass murder of innocent Palestinians by the government of Israel, funded and supported by the United States using our tax dollars. We will forever oblige her for her moral courage!

Dr. Adam Hamawy is a surgeon and former Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Army. He has served our country as a combat trauma surgeon in Iraq and Haiti, saving countless lives. MALEA had the oppurtunity to recognize him for his two medical missions in the West Bank and two tours in the recent years attending to the severly injured in Gaza.

Dr. Shadee Elmasry is an Imam at the New Brunswick Islamic Center and has been a MALEA Board member as the association Chaplin since our inception in 2020. We thank him for his leadership and guidance to us and the community at large. He has been the target of threats by individuals for his stance on current national and international topics involving Muslims. We admire his zeal and ability to continue speaking the truth without cowering.

What a wonderful MALEA Christmas Giveaway we had with our partner H.E.A.L.T.H For Youths at the Food Pantry, 120 Victory Boulevard in Staten Island. A sincere thank you and a big shout out to the volunteers and agencies we collaborated with to make this event a success, Goya Foods, Staten Island 4 Zohran, NAACP of SI, SI Unity Coalition, Metro Plus Health, Muslim Sisters of SI, Sisters from Sigma Gamma Rho, NorthEast Medical Practice, SI Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo, NYPD and the Richmond County Office of District Attorney.

One person who deserves all the credit is Dr. Heather Butts. This event was made possible by her leadership and assistance. She did a lot of work to bring it all together, and we have nothing but gratitude for her. This event was one of a kind and unprecedented where all these 501 charities, civil rights groups, social justice groups, SI citizens, and the law enforcement communities came together for a worthy and timely cause.

We intend to continue these partnerships to serve our communities, InshaAllah.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Thank you to all the first responders for working the holiday. May God bless and protect you, ameen!

MALEA had the distinct honor of serving the senior citizens of Staten Island with the assistance of volunteers from the NYC Mayor Elect Zohran Mamdani's campaign. We are thankful for the opportunity to serve the seniors during the ongoing food crisis for the less fortunate and vulnerable members of our communities.

We appreciate all our partners in serving others during this holiday. Please be safe and enjoy!
