8-8-26 SFD started the weekend assisting the Brookview Volunteer Fire Company with a six hour standby covering the Middlesex County Fair. Shortly after returning home we were dispatched around 1am to assist the Jamesburg Fire Department with a three alarm structure fire. SFD spent the rest of overnight hours on-scene assisting before being released. We would like to extend our condolences to the families of the victims from the fire. We would also like to wish a fast and complete recovery to the firefighters who were injured at the fire from the neighboring departments. Today, the department had its annual BBQ for the members. Thank you to the American Legion Post 253 for the use of the facilities and also to Ralph's Ices Spotswood for donating the Italian ice as a nice refreshing dessert!

8-2-26 at approximately 8:20pm SFD was dispatched to Old Stage road for the report of down power lines that were on fire. Ladder 71-9 & Engine 71-1 responded and found down primary electric lines on the roadway that were arching and on fire. Several minutes later we received a second call for a transformer arching at the intersection of Brunswick Ave & Old Stage Road. Units remained on scene several hours until the utility company was able to secure power and extinguish the fire.

7-28-26 SFD saw another round of storms causing several calls for service. There were down trees, poles, and wires throughout the town. Main Street had a pole snap with several transformers on it that resulted in an oil spill. Middlesex County Hazmat FMBA Local 100 responded to assist with the spill clean up while Main Street remained closed overnight for the pole replacement.

7-26-26 SFD attended a full scale exercise that brought together departments from several counties focused on building and maintaining large scale water supply operations. SFD was drafting out of the South River for several hours in order to maintain the volume of water needed for the exercise. Operations like this are used at large fires when municipal water systems are compromised or cannot sustain the volume of water needed. Thank you South River Fire Department for hosting the drill.

7-9-26 Another round of storms brought flash flooding and multiple calls for service for SFD today. There were multiple calls at the same time for down trees & wires, blown transformers, and the odor of something burning in a home. We also had communication issues in the borough from what appears to be a lightning strike on our radio communications tower. While SFD was dealing with these issues we were dispatched to the intersection of Old Stage Road & Brunswick Ave for a vehicle that had driven into flood water and became disabled. Rescue Engine 71-4 was already on the road handling another call and was able to respond immediately. Two swift water rescue technicians were able to enter the flood water and remove two occupants from their vehicle (one with a foot injury). The two occupants were then carried to a high water rescue vehicle operated by the East Brunswick Police Department and the Old Bridge Volunteer Fire Department. As a reminder never drive into flood water. Manhole covers can become dislodged and roadways can be washed away quickly disabling vehicles.

With another round of storms heading our way, follow these guidelines when dealing with down power wires.

-Always assume power lines are live
-Even if a line isn’t sparking or humming, it may be live.
-If you see a downed wire, keep a distance of at least 35 feet and call 9-1-1 to report it.
-Downed trees could have wires caught in them and wood can conduct electricity when wet. -Avoid coming in contact with branches or trees if they have fallen. If you are unsure if a wire caught in a tree is an electric wire, contact JCP&L.
-Water is a natural conductor of electricity and a downed line in a puddle or flooded area can electrify it, creating a deadly hazard. Even non-conducting materials like cloth or wood can conduct electricity when wet.
-Never touch a person in contact with a downed wire because human bodies can conduct electricity, which means the electricity will be passed on to you.

Driving near downed wires:

-NEVER drive over downed wires. If you are driving in an area with downed trees or utility poles, slow down, scan the road and stay away from any debris that may be caught in a downed wire.
-If your vehicle comes in contact with a downed wire, STAY INSIDE! Call 9-1-1 to request assistance and if someone approaches your car, roll down your window and ask them to keep their distance.

7-3-2026 SFD had multiple calls for service today. First was a mutual aid call for a structure fire in Monroe Twp Fire District #3’s area, members were on-scene for several hours before being released. Once back in the borough, SFD handled several simultaneous storm related calls with down trees and power lines in different areas of town. Units spent several hours out handling calls in the storm.

6-30-26 SFD assisted Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 - Station 51 with their Advanced Pump Operator/ Alternative Water Supply Class. Ladder 71-9 acted as a dry standpipe being fed from multiple lines.
