If you find a raptor that you think needs help, you can reach us by phone 715 781-2595. Please do not pick up a baby raptor until you speak to someone about it so we can help determine if the bird is truly orphaned. Many baby raptors leave the nest before they can fly and may end up on the ground until feathers completely grow in. You can send us things at PO Box 493, Spooner, WI 54801

Today it's all about Invictus! Supporters will recall that about a year ago a badly injured mature male Bald Eagle was admitted to our hospital. He was missing the outer 1/3rd of his right wing. He would never fly again, and could never be released. Dr Kim made a decision that day that changed his life, her life, and Winged Freedom's goal of public outreach.

From that day forward to the present, his life pivoted from wild, breeding adult eagle, to trainee for ambassador work. His horrible wound was treated and healed. Dr Kim applied for permanent custody and immediately started earning his trust. And other than a few days she has taken off, the two of them have trained every single day.

Simultaneously, we received generous funding from a private donor to build a custom enclosure for the bird. Heat, air conditioning, safe windows, a screened porch, a nice big bath, and adapted perches were all built for him. And he earned his name, Invictus, because his life has changed but still has great value and quality. Invictus is a poem about inner strength overcoming adversity. This eagle could teach us all about that!

And so today is moving day. The last of the projects is done and he is spending his first afternoon settling in. He has come so far in his trust building and training. When he is ready, the community will get to meet him and he will teach people all about Bald Eagles. Today Invictus is trying all of his perches, checking out the views from each window. It's not life in the wild, but it will be a good life!

Winged Freedom needed some doorway projects done. We reached out to Deagan from Cleveland Woodworking and look what he came up with!! A beautiful screened in front entry with a surprise custom sign that is just beautiful! And a vestibule inside our eagle flyway to prevent any escapes as we come and go. We are so impressed with Deagan's work ethic and quality of workmanship. We will certainly be using those skills around here for future projects!

Babies come in alone, hungry and desperate, and when possible they are re-nested to be raised by their own parents. When that is not possible, we provide the best nutrition and long term support for them as they start their journeys as wild owls.

They grow so fast, changing every day as their first set of real feathers emerge and they start testing wings to carry them. New objects like sticks and towels are toys for pouncing and carrying. They are honing vision skills and muscle coordination to become fierce hunters.

We watch them on cameras, laughing at their clumsy antics and attempts to be big. They eat an enormous amount of food to fuel their growing bodies, and we order frozen mice every 3 weeks just to stay ahead of consumption from now until September when migration slows our patient load.

Owls are hugely underrated as rodent population controllers. They put constant pressure on rodent and rabbit numbers as they feed themselves and growing families. Please don't poison their food by using mouse bait. The rodent that eats your poison is consumed by an unsuspecting predator like an owl, hawk or fox, and those animals die. Nature has a balance and it works!

Less than a week ago, this Barred Owl was found stunned on Hwy70 east of Spooner. He was transported to our hospital and treated for shock and a sore wing. Within a few days he was flying well and eating, and was deemed ready for release. Sometimes a speedy release is vitally important, like right now while Barred Owls are actively raising babies. Both parents are needed to provide adequate food for rapidly growing youngsters. Tonight he is back where he was found to resume his wild life. Watch him seemingly levitate out of the transport tote! Great flying ability!

A collection of photos that represent the start of our busy spring/summer season. For the next 5 months our staff will be admitting 2/3 of our total bird patients for the whole year. Babies, species that only spend summers this far north, and lots of disease and injuries will be showing up to keep us challenged. Winged Freedom receives no government subsidies or support. We are entirely funded by donations. If you would like to help by donating you can do so via paypal or by mail at PO Box 493, Spooner, WI 54801. Thank you so much!

Volunteers are the heart of what we do. Every day, week after week, it is our volunteers who showed up, roll up their sleeves, and get it done! Cutting up fish and meat, transporting birds, cleaning cages and flight pens, and keeping our hospital sparkling clean, they do it all!! Thank you to each and every one. You don't get enough credit, and you deserve it. There is a new snack station for everyone to share, so make sure you check that out!

So honored on this Earth Day to be entrusted with the care of these amazing birds! Nature's raptors are proud, independent, specialized hunters who sometimes get into situations requiring human help. That's where we come in. Last year, Winged Freedom admitted over 270 raptors for care. This year we expect that number will top 300! Happy Earth Day!

Three Great Horned Owl babies growing up without parents. It sounds sad, but we keep their bellies full, and feed their curiosity about the world. They will receive food support long after they are released, giving them ample time to develop hunting skills.

Our 4th baby arrived with 4 fractures suffered in the fall from his nest. He had surgery today to stabilize the broken bones and is facing one additional surgical procedure tomorrow on one leg. That's a lot for one baby! Updates on him as we see how he heals.

We hope you are all safe after the recent storms that have passed through northwest Wisconsin. Just a reminder, owls are nesting now and more species are getting ready to nest. Please check your property especially if you have heard or seen active nest situations. Not every baby owl on the ground needs rescue, and we are happy to talk you through your situation.

We are caring for two Great Horned owlets now, and although they are not related they consider each other siblings. They mature very quickly and we love seeing their appearances change by the day. The older owlet is Jackson and the newest one is Spark Plug ( he's a live wire crazy guy!) .

Baby season has officially started in the north woods! This little cutie is a Great Horned Owlet, found mobbed by crows and in a vulnerable location near Ladysmith.

We raise youngsters with every effort to keep them wild and provide them with the resources needed to learn their way in the wild world. Parent raised birds are always best. Sometimes circumstances prevent this and for now he will be warm, safe, and full. Welcome, little one!
