Learn about Indonesian Independence Day with Boba Buddies families this August! Local entrepreneurs and Mother-and-daughter tandem Mida and Izzie Wayuono will be our featured guests who will share about their people and culture through batik art activity and food from Indonesia! We will also have a special performance by featured youth musician, Christopher Anderson.

About our Boba Buddies guests—

✨ Mida Wayuono was born and raised in Medan on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, and moved to Miami with little more than a backpack and a dream of building a life in the United States. Through years of hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit, she went on to own and operate multiple successful restaurants. Now based in Spokane, she brings decades of restaurant experience to Izzie’s K-Dogs, where she works alongside her daughter, Izzie. Mida is proud to share the culture, traditions, and spirit of Indonesia with the Spokane community.

✨ Izzie Wayuono was born and raised in South Florida, and grew up immersed in both her Indonesian heritage and the restaurant world. After eventually making her way to Spokane, she carried those influences with her and founded Izzie’s K-Dogs, a Korean corn dog restaurant in the heart of downtown. As a second-generation Indonesian American, Izzie is passionate about creating spaces that bring people together and finding new ways to celebrate and share Asian culture with the Spokane community. She’s excited to celebrate Indonesian Independence Day alongside her mom, Mida, and share a piece of their culture together.

✨ Christopher Anderson is a 14-year old violinist and pianist, and has been a member of the Spokane Youth Symphony for 7 years. He’s competed and performed in a lot of venues, and recently performed in Sydney Opera House and Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia.

Boba Buddies is a free monthly cultural program that nurtures community belonging for K-8 (kindergarten and grades 1 through 😎 Asian and Asian American youth in the Spokane area. Each session explores different Asian cultural identities through storytelling, art activities, and creative play. We provide refreshments and every month will have special guests!

This program is centered for Asian and Asian American families but we have selected events that we open up to the public or pop-ups at events organized by other community partners.

Many of us were already carrying a lot this year, and the fires across Spokane are making that weight feel even heavier.⁠
⁠
For Asian and Asian American, immigrant, and refugee families, moments like this can come with added layers, helping elders understand changing information, caring for multiple generations, navigating language barriers, and trying to stay strong for the people we love.⁠

It is okay not to know exactly how to feel or respond right now. There is no right way to move through a moment like this. Whatever is coming up for you is valid and welcome.⁠

If you need a little grounding space away from the news and social media right now, come take a breath with community together. There is no pressure to talk or share. Enjoy a free coffee or tea, take a moment for your well-being, or simply sit with others.⁠

Sometimes we come into a space needing support. Sometimes, just by being there, we become part of the support for someone else.⁠

FREE DAY CAMP: Spokane Public school is offering a free emergency drop-in camp for children ages 4 and older on Monday, Aug. 3, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Shadle Park High School.

This is intended to give parents and caregivers impacted by wildfires a safe place for their children while they take a break, run errands, or address other immediate needs. Students do not need to be enrolled in Spokane Public Schools or live within SPS boundaries to attend.

Lunch will be provided at noon through the federal free summer meals program. Activities will be supervised by Spokane Public Schools staff. Please reach out at SpokaneSchools.org/Contact to connect with district support.

About Obon Festival
The annual Obon Festival - “A Dance for Joy“ - is presented by Spokane Buddhist Temple.
Obon is a time to honor our ancestors with gratitude, reflection, and joyful remembrance. At the Spokane Buddhist Temple, this annual celebration is filled with delicious handmade Japanese food, traditional crafts, and Bon Odori – the communal dance of remembrance and joy. Whether you’re remembering a loved one, learning about Buddhist traditions, or simply curious about Japanese culture, everyone is welcome. No dance experience needed – just follow along and feel the rhythm. All proceeds from the festival support our all-volunteer temple.

Join us and Inland Northwest Land Conservancy for a guided nature walk through Palisades Park led by volunteer hike docent Chris Moore.⁠

📍Palisades Park (Meet at the intersection of Greenwood Road and Rimrock Drive.) ⁠

🌳 4 hours | ~3 miles. Beginner-friendly/ frequent stops (no hiking experience needed!) ⁠

Through guided conversation and mindful moments in nature, we'll reflect on our own connections to places and the landscapes we call home.⁠

This hike/walk is part of Asians in the Outdoors, a community program creating welcoming outdoor experiences where Asians and Asian Americans can connect with nature, build community, and feel a greater sense of belonging outdoors. Through outdoor recreation and environmental education, we're making the outdoors more accessible while deepening our relationships with the lands and waters we all share.⁠
