Have you ever heard the expression "less lawn, more life"? It's true!

Replacing your lawn with a water-efficient is one of the most effective ways to reduce your water consumption. Around 80% of summer water use in Spokane goes to irrigation. A SpokaneScape needs less water - which means a lower water bill, and more water to go around. Not to mention: upgrading increases visual interest and makes our pollinators happy. 🐝🦋 Eligible City of Spokane water customers who install a SpokaneScape can receive up to $500 credit on their water bill, too!

One way to be is to use a rain barrel! 💧

If you've been waiting for your chance to get your own, the time has come. Join the @ Spokane Conservation District next Monday, August 24 at 5:30PM for their rain barrel workshop. You'll build your own rain barrel while learning about their benefits and how they can support your landscape, as well as barrel use and maintenance skills.

The workshop is $35 per household, and you'll leave with your own ready-to-use rain barrel!

Residents who have been evacuated and haven't used their water for more than a week should flush the water in their house before drinking to avoid issues with stagnant water in their homes. The Water Department recommends flushing water through internal plumbing fixtures to “turn over” the unused water and refresh water from the water main through pipes.

If your water has been turned off, do not try to restore utilities yourself. Call Spokane 311 to have water service safely restored.

We have been getting questions about the connection between drought response watering guidelines and the catastrophe our community is facing.

We have not had any indication that residential fires have been impacted by following the City’s drought ordinance watering guidelines. Fire officials have described this tragic incident as an unprecedented wind-driven event. In fact, the National Weather Service labeled it as its first-ever, extreme tier “Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS)” event by the National Weather Service Spokane region. This fire has been described by experts as operating similar to a forest fire and traveling treetop to treetop while being violently accelerated by 30 to 50 mph winds within hours. There has been no indication or evidence that properties that have been following level one or level two watering schedules were at an increased risk of fire danger.

We appreciate the attention our community has given to balancing water conservation and maintaining fire wise spaces around their homes. The key is to understand your property’s landscape irrigation needs and not over watering. Additionally, recommendations for managing space in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas should be looked at for guidance.

The City’s Water Department has been able to maintain water within fire response levels in its tanks and reservoirs and throughout the system, even in the most impacted areas within the wildfire’s path. Every little bit of system efficiency has made this possible.

We 💙 you, Spokane.

Our hearts and thoughts are with those affected by the Spokane area fires. We are thankful for the first responders who have been working tirelessly to control the fires and protect our community.

We wanted to share some helpful resources:
-Follow City of Spokane - Municipal Government for official updates
-Consult the Spokane County Emergency Management map at bit.ly/SRECOfficialEvacmap for up-to-date evacuation information
-If you are displaced, emergency shelter is available at the Spokane Convention Center; pets are welcome and there is no charge for parking. Space for animals is also available at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center.

During these difficult times, we are heartened to see our community coming together to support one another. Every small act of kindness makes a difference. Be kind to one another, and stay safe, Spokane.
