We’re grateful to Innovia Foundation for contributing to the State of Women and Children (SWAC) report, helping bring a clearer picture of the issues impacting women and children in our region to the forefront.

The report gives our community more than information. It gives us a place to start, questions to ask and opportunities to work together toward meaningful change. Meet Susan McDonald Osborn, founder and Executive Director of Spokane Helpers Network, a grassroots nonprofit connecting Spokane County neighbors with food, hygiene supplies, and other essential resources.

What started as Susan helping families during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a network of roughly 180 volunteers and supporters serving people who may face barriers to traditional assistance, including homebound neighbors.

At the heart of Susan’s work is a simple philosophy: Resource, Not Rescue. She believes everyone should have access to the resources they need and the opportunity to find support within their own community.

Meet Janine, a leader with more than two decades of experience advancing human rights, safety, and opportunity for vulnerable communities.

After a 23-year career with the U.S. Department of State, where she held leadership roles focused on preventing gender-based violence, humanitarian support, and refugee services, Janine joined YWCA Spokane in 2025.

Meet Dr. Melissa Mace, a Spokane-based mental health advocate, clinical leader, and educator dedicated to making mental wellness care more accessible and transforming the way mental health is talked about.

As the founder and Clinical Director of Discovery Counseling Group, Dr. Mace brings years of experience in trauma-focused care, behavioral therapy, and community engagement. She’s also passionate about mentoring future social workers and advocating for communities that have historically faced barriers to care.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the Hispanic and Latina women whose leadership, resilience and advocacy have helped shape our communities and our country.

From educators and entrepreneurs to advocates, organizers and community leaders, their impact reaches far beyond their own accomplishments. They open doors, create opportunities and make it possible for the women who come after them to dream bigger.
