Our youth spent a recent afternoon painting at the Clubhouse, fully absorbed in their work. Making space for art is part of how we nurture one of our Core Assets, Find Your Spark. It's the belief that kids use creativity to explore their passions, and all they need is the room to try and someone who believes what they make matters.

Tie dye was a hit at camp this summer, and the shirts have stuck around all season. So we had to smile when this kiddo put his own spin on it. With his mom's help, he added Friends of the Children to his. 🫶

Arts and crafts kept our youth busy at camp this summer, from beading to decorating their very own respect jars. The jars tied into something we spent time on together: respect, and how we show it to each other. Kids filled them with notes celebrating their friends for being kind, caring, or thoughtful. A simple idea that helped them notice the good in one another.

The Spokane Complex Wildfires have affected thousands of families across our region. In the face of it, our community has responded with remarkable generosity and coordination.

We were glad to keep our Summer Camp running, giving the youth we serve a safe and steady place indoors, away from the smoke. We were also grateful to join Spokane Public Schools and dozens of local organizations at Shadle Park High School to coordinate support for affected families.

To everyone who has lost so much, our hearts are with you. For those seeking help or looking to give it, the district and Innovia Foundation have gathered local resources at SpokaneCommunityResources.org.

At camp this week, Mentor Emmit shared the story of Turtle Island that he was told as a little boy. After listening, the kids made their own clay turtle islands. The next day, they returned to it, painting the part that stuck with them most. Coming back to a story like this is how it becomes theirs to keep.

Summer at the Clubhouse looks a lot like summer should. Basketball on the new hoop, games of catch, sq**rt bottles, and a group of kids fully invested in the bugs they found. Days like this are the whole reason we run camp. Kids get to be kids, mentors get time with them that isn't squeezed between school and everything else, and nobody has to wait until September to reconnect.

From Guess Who to Connect 4, classic board games have been getting a workout at summer camp. There's something about sitting across from a friend and playing a game that never gets old. Thank you to the donors who made sure these were here for our youth to enjoy.

Arts and crafts have been a steady part of summer camp. Tie-dye, Play-Doh, friendship bracelets, drawing, painting, and whatever else our youth decide to make that day. Giving kids the time and materials to create something is one of the easiest ways to help them relax, focus, and show a little of who they are.

Reading is a big part of what we do with our youth, summer camp included. Our kids got to design their own bookmarks to use as they read through the summer. Some designs were more timeless than others, but every one of them walked away with something they made and a reason to keep turning pages.
