Women's Healing & Empowerment Network - WHEN is grateful for another critical grant for Frieda’s Healing Center.

WHEN received the boost from the Women Helping Women Fund (WHWF), along with meeting keynote speaker Erin Brockovich at the annual Give Like a Woman event on May 19, 2026.

"This grant is vital to us. We’re not a huge organization and, because we are faith-based, many people think we are trying to change their beliefs,” said WHEN founder and Chief Executive Director Mable Dunbar. “Instead, we come from a faith-based perspective to let individuals know that they don't need to stay in abusive relationships because of religion.”

This is the second WHWF grant WHEN has received. While Dunbar is grateful for the financial support, she also understands that time spent networking with other nonprofits in the area is invaluable.

“We connected with a lot of other organizations that didn't even know we existed, and we didn't know they existed,” Dunbar explained. That’s critical because Frieda’s Healing Center and its holistic approach, including counseling, support groups, workshops, and wellness activities, helps ensure survivors steer clear of abusive relationships.

"Frieda's Healing Center provides everything for women through different programs, our food bank, and clothing closet," explained Dunbar. "We also work in connection with victims' services and the Airway Heights Police Department as part of a network that provides healing and help to victims of domestic violence in the West Plains and even across the country.”

Thank you, Women Helping Women Fund, for supporting our efforts to change lives. Together, we are making a difference.

The Women’s Healing and Empowerment Network (WHEN) is grateful for close community collaboration.

YWCA Executive Director Janine Wynne toured Frieda’s House with WHEN Founder and President Mable Dunbar. Frieda’s House is a safe living center that helps women recover from abuse.

Wynne is new to Spokane and praised WHEN’s work. “These women in the Airway Heights community have vision,” Janine said. “They are building bridges and connecting with people. I just was so incredibly humbled by the sort of mightiness of their approach and their vision and the grace that they showed."

"The YWCA offers a wide range of programs and services that can be beneficial for our clients, Dunbar explained. "We are encouraging them to explore what the YWCA has to offer them as they seek healing, empowerment, and an abuse-free environment.'

Our new collaboration led Dunbar and Frieda’s House Manager, Maritza, to attend the first YWCA Resource Fair. We provided flyers and brochures at the resource fair along with other service providers.

We know there is strength in numbers and are grateful to rise together to face challenges.

Another successful Women's Healing & Empowerment Network (WHEN) community giveaway is in the books.

Corporal Adam Johnson from the Airway Heights Police Department and WHEN volunteers distributed free clothing, household and hygiene products, and pet food. A line of people wrapped around the Hope Center at 13326 West Sunset Highway. The giveaways are a beacon of hope for families in the Airway Heights and surrounding communities.

Together, we strive for a world filled with compassion and kindness. We could not do our vital work without our donors and volunteers.

The Women’s Healing and Empowerment Network (WHEN) is proud of the nine participants who completed our support group, "Trauma and Memory Loss Support Group.”

WHEN founder and president Mable Dunbar facilitated the workshop.

Members met every Thursday from January 22 until April 3 to better understand the impact trauma can have on our lives and brains.

Topics included "The Relationship Between Traumatic Experiences and Memory Function (Triggers)" and "How Trauma Affects Memory."

To all those who attended, thank you!

We are grateful for the steps you are taking as we work to ensure people can lead abuse and trauma-free lives.

The Women’s Healing & Empowerment Network (WHEN) volunteers are racing to get ready for the next community giveaway.

The event is scheduled for April 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Hope Center, 13326 West Sunset Highway.

The giveaway is a beacon of hope for Airway Heights families. Volunteers will distribute free clothing, household and hygiene products, and animal food to a couple of hundred people.

Hope Center is a one-stop shop that houses WHEN’s Warehouse, its subsidiary Cleone’s Closet, and other programs such as West Plains Victim Services and Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD). Both grant-funded programs provide advocacy, case management, and resources to those who have been victims of violence or those who are struggling with stability due to behavioral health or substance misuse challenges.

We can’t wait to see you on April 26, 2026.

The Women Healing and Empowerment Network relies on its amazing volunteers to meet an ever-increasing need, particularly in providing food to people in need.

That’s why Ankica Loncar, the manager for Cleone’s Closet Food Pantry and Cleone’s Closet, is vital to our work. WHEN is proud to name Ankica the 2025 Volunteer of the Year.

Ankica first found Cleone’s Closet Food Pantry when she needed help. The service made all the difference in a tough time, so Ankica decided to pay it back.

She brings over two decades of experience in the restaurant industry to the job. Coworkers credit her with effective management of volunteers, organizing food distribution, and ensuring cleanliness and efficiency for day-to-day operations.

Ankica says she “gets great fulfillment in serving others and strives to the best of her ability to go beyond her job description.”

As a result of her organizational skills and commitment to excellence, Cleone's Closet was awarded Best of the West Non-Profit for 2025.

Thank you, Ankica, for all you do to help our neighbors in need.

We’re grateful for the chance to honor Craig Fruin as the Women’s Healing and Empowerment Network 2025 Volunteer of the Year.

WHEN presented him with the award at its Purple Ribbon Banquet in March 2026.

WHEN praised Craig for his commitment, dedication, and loyalty shown in his service to others. He’s not a deeply religious man. But WHEN founder and President Mable Dunbar credited his “unassuming, determined actions that portray a man who genuinely loves people” and does all he can to “help those who are suffering, disenfranchised, and victimized.” Craig served as president of the WHEN Board of Directors and remains an Advisory Board member.

But Craig does much more in our community. His commitment to the Spokane area has led him to support not only WHEN but also other organizations, including helping keep their programs operational.

Craig Fruin is the General Manager/ Operating Partner of Spokane Hyundai. Before Spokane Hyundai, Craig ran successful Honda, BMW, and Infiniti dealerships in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. With the acquisition of Spokane Hyundai, Craig and his wife, Amber, moved their family from Calgary to Spokane in 2018.

We’re so glad you chose to call Spokane home. Thank you, Craig, for all you do to empower men and women and help them heal from violence.
