After two weeks on the Old Trails Fire, all Spokane County Fire District 8 firefighters have been released.

We leave grateful for the people we met, the neighborhoods that welcomed us, and the incredible firefighters who worked tirelessly through long days and difficult conditions.

This simple message says so much: “Thank you first responders and neighbors. We love you.”

Our hearts are with everyone affected. May the days ahead bring healing, rebuilding, and hope.

Captain Wood reflected on the bittersweet nature of the evening. "Coming back here today is bittersweet," Wood said. "There is a lot that we saved, but what is remarkable is seeing this neighborhood—whether they lost their house or their house is still here—it didn't break their spirit."

8/8/26 Malden, WA. Spokane County Fire District 8 and Spokane County Fire District 9 firefighters worked together to protect threatened homes at the when they heard dogs barking in a locked home. Firefighters made entry, cleared the home and freed the trapped k9s. Working most of the night, firefighters from multiple agencies were able to save lots of homes!
