Contact us at [email protected] Dining With Dignity provides 6 weekly (4 breakfasts Mon - Thurs + 2 dinners Mon and Tues). Breakfast is served 7:30 am to 8:30 am and dinner is served 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Pathways program provides case management to assist clients in accessing housing, medical/

dental, employment/training, legal and income supports. Volunteer Opportunities:

• Help serve breakfast: Mon - Thurs: 7:30 am to 8:30 am
• Help serve dinner: Mon and Tues: 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm
• Office support: data entry of volunteer hours, filing
• Specialty drives: personal care, food items, winter wear
• Volunteer coordination: recruitment, application processing (including background checks), training
• Donations: Cup-A-Soups, individual -size apple juice, styrofoam bowls, plastic spoons, lunch-size paper bags, blankets, sugar, coffee, wool socks, personal care items (deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, razors), sleeping bags, backpacks
• Equipment: new convection oven, gas oven, griddle, plastic cups and bowls

Meet Fish. This is what he has to say about the sudden closure of Dining with Dignity on Thursday.

Shalom was a place a spirit could come to rest
and not feel shunned or castaway
doubted or feared

He also said this:

Everyone fights their own battles and wars and
In their own time...who are we to be the judge of someone
when we have problems ourselves.

Thank you, Fish, for sharing your heart through verse with us. Sometimes the most powerful testimony about what a place means comes from the folks who needed it the most. He reminds us that Shalom was never simply a place to get a meal. It was a place to come to find acceptance when the streets all too often offered rejection. At Shalom our diners didn't have to prove their worth...dignity was not something they had to earn. They were seen, welcomed, valued, and worthy of the dignity they deserved by simply joining us at the table.

Here is Diner Neil and Shalom Volunteer Peg Johnson from this morning at the M.A.S.S. breakfast in the carport at Shalom. He asked to have his photo taken with her and talked about how important Dining with Dignity has been to him and so many. He has quite a story and is just awaiting word that his housing has been fully approved. One more reminder of why Shalom is an anchor for our houseless community.

Yesterday was Shalom's Dining with Dignity's last day of breakfast service but because Shalom had planned to be closed on Fridays for the month of August, Stephanie with Chas arranged for outside community members to serve in the carport. M.A.S.S. (Mutual Aide Survival Squad) stepped up with delicious burrito bowls and an abundance of kindness. They serve Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00pm on the corner of Pacific and State. Thank you, M.A.S.S. and Stephanie, for making this happen for our diners!

Here are a few photos from this morning and some from yesterday, the final day. You will see smiles in these photos because our amazing Ops Director, Suki, set the tone. Emotions were all over the place, but everyone did their best to meet the day with a nod toward the positive. Of course, many expressed hope that Shalom will reopen soon. The diners were gracious and full of thanks and hugs all around. It was not an easy day, but it happened. Now it's time to secure a new location and return to the mission of creating a safe, caring dining space for our hungry, houseless, addicted and mentally challenged along with all the services that have made Shalom and community partners a model, a medical hub wrapped around a food program serving over 200 folks a day. That meant having resource opportunities right at hand when a diner reached out for help. It was working and changing lives. It can work again.

When vast wildfires devastated many acres of our city and over 800 homes were destroyed leaving hundreds of families homeless and without anything, Spokane opened their hearts and wallets wide to respond. Resource centers were quickly established, and the community came through in a monumental way donating dollars, necessities and other emergency resources. Among those responding was the Carl Maxey Center who set up clothing donations at the MLK Center for fire victims to take what they needed. When they were ready to close down, a conversation between The Carl Maxey Center Executive Director, Jillisa Winkler and Chas Outreach Worker, the tireless Stephanie Ullah, connected Shalom with a call to come pick out what we could use for our Dressing with Dignity Closet which is open each morning during breakfast service. We leapt at the opportunity. The offer could not have come at a better time for us. Once again, our bins were low or empty of some of our most requested and needed items.... men's jeans, t-shirts, shoes, women's small pants and shorts, hoodies and sweatpants. Not only did they allow us to choose the items we could best use, Juli and Derrick helped select our requests too! The genuine warmth and welcome they extended made that huge gym feel like a warm and loving family living room. Thank you all for inviting us in and for sharing your resources with our houseless community downtown in addition to rising to provide for the emergency needs of the fire victims. We look forward to a long and reciprocal relationship in the years to come. Thank you. We are so grateful ❤️!

Every morning, a beacon of hope shines bright at Shalom! Our dedicated team of Dining with Dignity volunteers and core staff open their hearts and doors to welcome our community's hungry, homeless, and those struggling with addiction and mental health issues. It's not just a meal, but connection, belonging, and an opportunity to link arms with the most compassionate change-makers in our city! A hot meal, paired with medical, mental health, and harm reduction care, is a lifeline for those fighting to make it through another day. Thank you to every single staff member, volunteer, community champion, and lived experience leader who helped create this vibrant 'Hub' of care and compassion in July and all the months to come. One of our volunteers went out to the Goodwill Bins in Airway Heights this morning to help restock our men's shorts and pants needs. Everything is sold by the pound! She said this load was under $100! Fifty pairs of much needed jeans and shorts plus other items that will be gone within a few days. It's a great place to pick up inexpensive clothing and it's really easy on your budget! It's fun and maybe a little chaotic but it's a great way to lend a hand to those who have little. Now we just need men's XL-3X T-shirts and shoes all sizes, and we will be able to offer clothing again for a few days. Thank you so much to all who continue to support our Dressing with Dignity Closet!

UPDATE: To-Go food will be provided in the parking lot each of those Fridays, 7:30am-8:30am as usual. Thank you to Stephanie Ullah, CHAS Street Medicine and Outreach Team for organizing these meals to be furnished by outside organizations! Every meal served could mean the only meal our diners receive that day. Shalom is eternally grateful for the incredible partnership with CHAS. And thank you to all who came forward to fill those days of need for our diners.
