So great to see Mabel getting the recognition she deserves! Mabel is a stunning example of a local person who has dedicated her life to ending modern day slavery!
Mabel.
Building a movement takes individuals willing to do the work, find the partnerships and follow through.
In Spokane last night, that person was Mabel and the movement is Leaving the Life. Mabel works with Lutheran Community Services and is part of the county task force addressing human trafficking. Our introduction through a partner organization was only a couple of months ago, but she took my message to heart: let's build a social justice movement around story, starting with thelongnightmovie.com.
She found a venue at , the to put us up for the night, to underwrite the event, and pulled together a panel including the county Sheriff's office and FBI.
It was an amazing opportunity to help build community engagement and investment. In Spokane, many don't know what domestic minor s*x trafficking is, or that it exists in their community. Experts like Mabel confront it daily, but to effect change they need the community to understand their role. Using story to open the community's eyes is a start.
Many thanks to Mabel, but even more thanks to those who came to the event and supported her efforts.
