At EWI of Spokane, we believe education changes lives.

We'll be celebrating this year's scholarship recipients, remarkable students whose curiosity, leadership, resilience, and ambition are shaping bright futures. Every scholarship represents an investment not only in an individual, but in the communities they will one day serve.

We hope you'll join us in congratulating these outstanding students and cheering them on as they begin their next chapter.

Jene Ray- Northeast Community Center

What’s one piece of advice you would offer to women looking to step into leadership or board service?

You don't have to have previous experience leading a committee or serving on a board to be a valuable, impactful leader in EWI. Committee and board members support each other's leadership development, and share a growth mindset that allows us all to fix any missteps as we learn and stay in relationship with other EWI Reps. Our membership leans into supporting each other personally and professionally, and our shared impact can't be realized without everyone stepping to the edge of their comfort zone. Watch your business expand with the support you will gain from EWI Spokane.

A favorite hobby or passion outside of work:

I used to say reading books in the sunshine, but since I don't seem to find time, I've discovered audiobooks. Now I can drive to work or home with a meditation on community (Greg Boyle), or a new nutritional tip (Dr. Gundry). My commute has become self-care!

One of the most meaningful meetings of the year our May Scholarship Meeting.

Hearing from our scholarship candidates is always a highlight. Their passion, resilience, and vision for what’s ahead reminds us exactly why EWI continues to invest in education and opportunity.

We also heard from Gordon Hester, who shared a glimpse into his journey and the importance of giving back through education.

Moments like this are what the EWI impact is all about. ✨

Janessa Lawson- Rogue Heart Media SPC

What is one piece of advice you would offer to women looking to step into leadership or board service?

Say yes, even when it's uncomfortable--especially when it's uncomfortable. When I was first asked to be my firm's EWI rep - fewer than 3 months into my new position, at a new workplace, in an industry I had little experience in - I didn't have much context. In all honesty, I didn't really know much about what I was signing up for, but I'd heard nothing but glowing reviews of EWI of Spokane from my predecessor. So, I jumped in with both feet and an emphatic "yes."
And it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. ☺️

A favorite hobby or passion outside of work:

I'm a longtime crocheter! I first learned to crochet in elementary school, when my Montessori teacher taught me, but it didn't really stick. In my early 20s, I re-taught myself using the internet. I even once taught a crochet class to teens at the EWU summer camp where I'm an alum. Recently, I learned Tunisian crochet, which is kind of a cross between crochet and knitting. Even after crocheting for nearly two decades, I seem to learn something new with each new project.
If anyone else is a fiber artist, I'd love some company at Lunarium's fiber arts group that meets on the last Thursday of every month!

Our EWI Spokane Flower Basket Fundraiser was such a beautiful success. 🌸

Thank you to everyone who ordered baskets and supported this year’s sale. Seeing all the bright, colorful, overflowing baskets lined up for pickup made for such a fun day, and we hope they bring a little extra joy to your homes and patios all summer long.

What makes this fundraiser even more meaningful is where the support goes. Every purchase helps fund scholarships for local students, including adult and non-traditional learners, while also supporting our elementary reading rallies throughout the Spokane community.

We’re so grateful for the continued support of our chapter, our community, and everyone who chooses to give back in ways that create lasting impact. And a special thank you to Karen Klein and for helping make this fundraiser possible year after year.

Enjoy your baskets this summer! 🌷

What initially inspired you to get involved with EWI, and what keeps you engaged today?
I have been involved with EWI since 2006 and am working for my 4th EWI firm. My past manager encouraged me to join to grow my leadership skills and connect with other women in the community. Since then, I have continued to be involved even encouraging my current firm to join EWI knowing the benefits of this organization not only connect EWU with future students/parents but also allow us to be more involved in the community outside of Cheney. As the Regions Polytechnic being a member of EWI allows us to connect with industry partners, support education and the pursuit of knowledge and be a part of something special.

A small habit or routine that helps you stay grounded or energized:
I currently represent the largest college at EWU supporting six schools and over 4,000 students. My day is full of demands from planning events to support student iniatives, working with donors and colleagues to raise funds to support student scholarships and networking to build new partnerships in the community and beyond. I have found the best way for me to unplug to recharge is going out to the barn where I keep my horse and going out on a trail ride knowing that at the barn I have little to no wifi so I do not have the option to check emails and respond. This time forces me to enjoy nature and visits with other women who have a love of horses like myself.

Celebrating 47 years of EWI Spokane and what a night it was🎉.

This month’s theme, The EWI Effect, came to life through honest, uplifting conversation from our panel of incredible women leaders. There was laughter, reflection, and a shared sense of purpose that carried throughout the room.

The biggest takeaway, when we create space to share our stories, we don’t just connect, we elevate each other. Words like uplifting, empathy, and meaningful purpose weren’t just said…they were felt.

Grateful for the voices, the vulnerability, and the impact this community continues to make. Congratulations to our chapter for a wonderful 47 years!

EWI Spokane had a great time at our March chapter meeting at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Gathering in a space so deeply connected to our community made for a meaningful evening of connection, conversation, and learning.

Thank you to Wes Jessup, Executive Director of the MAC, for sharing his insights and leadership journey. His perspective on the role of arts and culture in shaping strong communities truly resonated.

Evenings like this are a reminder of the power of bringing women together with a shared purpose.

We’re grateful for this network and the continued opportunity to grow, connect, and support one another.
