Thank you to the joyful and hardworking volunteers from Sun City Church for volunteering with us on Saturday for Serve Day! They did an amazing job weeding, helping us move river rock, and splitting wood!
If you are interested in purchasing some of the wood for a donation to DHC, please contact us.

On Saturday, Dishman Hills staff and volunteers cleaned up a shelter near the yellow loop in the Natural Area. It was made from roughly 15 green trees that were cut down using a hatchet; one of the trees being over 40 years old. This happened last year as well on the west side of the area and in that instance they cut all the trees out of a rock formation. In both cases, it appeared that they were not "homeless" camps but more temporary shelters; possibly just someone testing survival skills. Needless to say, building these shelters in the Dishman Hills causes a lot of damage and takes decades to regrow. If you hear someone cutting trees with a saw or a hatchet and they are not the county or DHC workers, please contact the county or crime check. Thank you for looking out for our lands.

Kids in the lab was a huge success! The kids learned all about the history of microscopes, how they work, and how to properly use them! They got to look at all kinds of specimens up close from murky lake water to yeast cells. Thank you to Lisa and Mo for teaching these kids fantastic science and all of the other volunteers that made this event possible. We hope to do it again soon!

If you didn't get a chance to read about Kids in the Hills in our newsletter, here is a brief summary of this amazing event made possible by the great efforts of WA State Certified Naturalists and many volunteers!

We concluded the month of May with Kids in the Hills. This is an excellent opportunity to offer students an educational and exciting field day in the Dishman Hills. Through hands-on activities, students learned about observation skills, animal adaptations, natural science, and enjoy time out in nature. Volunteers in the DHC Education Committee along with volunteers from WA Certified Naturalists, WA Fish and Wildlife and Department of Natural Resources provided this extraordinary outdoor experience for around 500 students in total. The students were 3rd and 4th graders from five local elementary schools including Adams Elementary, University Elementary, Opportunity Elementary, Broadway Elementary, and Mullan Elementary. (Pictured-Volunteers and Certified Naturalists Lisa Klapp, Melody Getman, Michelle Stuart, Karen Edward, Rick Severn, and Sara Kennedy)

Thank you to everyone who came out to Ruth’s “Two for Tuesday” hike yesterday. It was a great afternoon hike as we chose a shady out-and-back route and took a few stops to learn more about the nature around us. 🌿🌲🌱
